So my t-jet is going in for a service on Friday and I've asked them to replace/fill up the transmission oil. My gearbox has been dripping for a while now and it's sometimes hard to get into 2nd gear if you're hooning about. I can sometimes hear a slight whirring when the car is warming up aswell.

What's the verdict going to be? Part of me wants the 'box to die quickly as an excuse to upgrade to a Golf GTI or Audi TT. Reckon the fresh oil will sort it out or is it going to go bang any time soon? :hm:

I think I remember reading that the oil seals can give trouble on the t-jet box.

Not sure about wishing it to fail, you'll only end up having to pay to fix it before you sell it.

Mk 5 golf gti I assume? Get one with the smaller standard wheels (optional larger wheels ruin the ride apparently) and the check cloth rather than leather.

Yep, the oil seals on the T-Jet box are known for perishing and causing a leak. As you know, running with low oil in the box will shorten it's life. Topping up the oil will help you to some extent, but it's not a solution, you'll need to get the seals replaced.

I'm having mine replaced and gearbox oil changed when my clutch is done, just as a precaution really. I'd rather them do it now than having to take the box out again specifically to do it.
MISC1691 are you saying yours still leaks?

Yeah I just heard it was a massive job replacing them as the whole gearbox needs to be stripped down. I've also heard stories that by topping the oil up again it can cause the seals to leak more and totally fail... so I guess I'll have to wait and see!

I'd really like to get a Mk6 GTI or (newish) Audi TT with the new 2.0TFSI engine. Audi claims similar mpg figures to the T-jet aswell as a 0-60 time of 6.1 secs

Thats a big upgrade from a t-jet, numbers come up? I can see why you are interested in a tt, less so a golf mk6. Have you considered an Alfa gulietta? My dad has a 170 multiair and whilst slower than a golf gti, its pretty quick. The ride quality is amazing too.

Well when I took it to fiat I told them, I have trouble getting it into reverse most of the time, when accelerating hard changing up into 2nd it wouldnt do it and youd get the lovely loud grinding noise for all to hear and 4th was a litle shaky, they came back and told me it was the leaking seal, so that at least fixed that but my gearbox is still complete crud, has all the same problems as before if not slightly worse lol, for all I know it could still be leaking (n) lol

It's possible, topping up the oil could cause increased pressure on the seals and make them deteriorate even more.

Maybe the low oil did some damage to your box then? I'd take it back again if I was you.
