The BBC WATCHDOG THREAD

I had an issue which seemed to affect my power steering, cut out completely one day. The garage I used were initially adamant I needed a new power steering column, however it transpired that it was an alternator issue that was not easily detected during diagnostics. Apparently the fault wasn't picked up the first few times they tested it. I'm no expert but maybe it's typical that the fault is not picked up and the most likely solution is to replace the power steering problem?

Your garage was no expert either its common knowledge that low battery power can cause pas fault so most start with battery and charging system check.
Don't be so condescending Dave. I was merely offering a different possibility that might not be so obvious to some people. The alternator was the fault in my experience, not the battery.

;)
Aye but cars of yesteryear hard huge steering wheels and skinny tyres :p
My 1998 Punto 1.4 CL didn't have either, but it was fine once on the move. It taught both elder daughters not to 'dry steer'. Also built up your shoulders and biceps.

Just tried to view the video which is linked to in the original post

Not sure if it's because I'm not in the UK, or because it has been removed, but the video is not available.

Found it on Youtube and just adding a link here for anybody who wants to see it
