Ive developed a knocking/rattle noise coming from the front end of the car, its much more noticeable at low speeds (30mph and under), just uneven road makes it rattle it doesnt need to be a big pot-hole. ive checked the front springs, drop links, track rod ends everything seems to be ok.

im hoping someone else has any ideas for what to check, its annoying as hell the noise!

Cheers

Dave

Iv just had what sounds to be the same problem, and it turned out to be a drop link.

Can you tell which side its coming from? If not chances are its a drop link.

Had the same on a Skoda years ago after hitting a pot hole. Turned out I'd damaged the steering arm pin.

This possibly.

With the car stopped and engine on turn the steering to the left then to the right, does it sound like a broken mattress?

Another way is to get a friend to turn the wheel while you put your fingers on the coil spring.

Thats a different issue, juddering top mounts doesn't nessecarily mean they've gone, just need lubing.

Need to jack the car up and see if there is any up/down movement in the leg I believe.

I have this, sounds like it's coming from underneath the car.

I've had it checked numerous times by garages with no results, so can only assume it's not serious or detrimental to the working of the car.

Hey everyone thank you for your replys.

just to cover what has been asked by the people that have replied, ive checked :- wheel nuts (all tight), springs seem to be in good nick couldnt see any cracks or snapped pieces, checked drop links they seem ok smooth movement on the ball joint. havent checked top mounts, but when the car is stopped ive put full lock on both sides of the steering and no crunching or grinding sounds.

it is hard to tell what side it comes from but to be honest sometimes it does sound from underneath at the front of the car, but it is hard to tell.

damn cars!!!!

My steering has a same/similar problem, if I stop my car then slowly, and I mean very slowly turn my steering wheel left or right, it sounds like an old creaking door. Plus you can only hear it from inside the car as if it is coming from the steering column. I have replaced all shocks, springs, top mounts, drop links seem like to be in good condition. I suspect something silly like the plastic trim behind my steering wheel or something, maybe I should try slide a piece of card in between it and see if it still creaks. I have a t-jet 09 with 23k on the clock. I hope this helps, or if anyone could help me!!

does anyone have any info on if the anti roll bar bushes could be a problem, ive changed both link arms, i really dont think its the top mounts because there is no noise when turning full lock both ways, the noise is coming from under the car at the front.

****UPDATE****

right me and my dad spent a couple of hours Saturday with the car to try and find where this noise is coming from. after a fair time of rocking, listening, wedging, probing etc... we have found where the noise is coming from!!! :D

it was hard to determine where the noise was coming from because the rattle/knocking was travelling through the cars body. But the rattle is definitely coming from the anti roll bar, if you get the car on ramps and lay underneath just a bit further back than the bulk head of the engine bay you can see the steering rack, well the ARB runs behind the steering rack and then crosses over it onto 2 mounts 1 for both sides. The passenger side is where the noise is and its coming from where the mount is fixed in place you can just get your hand on it buts it very hard to actually tell if there is play in it because to be honest we both thought it looked ok, but its definitely coming from here because just by putting you hand on it the noise stops.

it looks quiet a big job to get the ARB mounts out so we'll be cracking on with that another day when we have more time.

just a question is there a haynes manual or any other manual for working on the GP's? when i went to halfords they said haynes dont make manuals for the GP's because they havent been out long enough or something.

Is it the ARB bush or the drop link that is making the noise?

pictures about 1/2 way down of the drop link on the gp shown there and how to undo

I beleve the ARB bushes are not availible from fiat as a part and the clamps wont split to remove them easily so officially its a NEW arb job

(if your kind enough to donate a bit of your hard earned money to the forum we give you access to out "members offers" section which includes a 10% discount code for shop4parts ;) )

However you can get after market bushes eg (from google)
