After an intermittent loss of power steering assistance, 'sliding' moments (sudden over-assistance whilst negotiating a round-about), light assistance whilst turning left and noticeably heavier whilst turning right, and a gradually increasing tendency of pulling to the left, I bit the bullet and had a new electric steering motor fitted... WHAT A TRANSFORMATION! I always remembered my 2006 Grande Punto steering to be very light, yet now the steering is a lot meatier, much heavier, seems Fiat have finally cracked it! Although the car does not 'talk' to the driver in the same way a Focus mk2 does, the new steering system is very nearly there. Very pleased, although £966.32 bill was somewhat heart-attack inducing, but thankfully Warranty Direct paid £556.00 towards the repair, which softened the blow. It feels as if my car is brand new despite having covered 93k miles!
