Hi All,

Ive just become the proud owner of a 2007 1.9 Multijet Sporting in black. 49k on the clock.

I got a bit of a bargain from a private seller, though i was aware of potential turbo problems. I'm coming from a 350z, and although i loved the Zed - this is way more fun to drive!

The issue im having is the "siren" sound. It does it when stationary if i rev it, as well as under acceleration. The sound is high pitched and goes up and down with the revs. It is very loud and i cant see how this is normal (though ive never owned a derv before)

It sounds just like this

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU56et0kWzo

It pulls really hard and theres no smoke that ive noticed.

What ya think...turbo failure imminent or more likely a leak somewhere?

Has anyone got a link to a video of what the turbo should sound like?

Help appreciated

Mark

just to add - it doesnt whine at tick over - only when i rev it a bit

Mine did this, if you search it it's all over the place! I think you will get different answers from everyone. When my old 1.9 did this I just got it changed as the car was still under warranty. But I would get it checked by a garage or Car mechanic that you can trust or a well known one as some will just say 'The bearings are going' when there other possible causes for the 'Whining'.

Although in saying that, After mine was done, mine still whined so who knows! I would get it checked over if I were you and get it done A.S.A.P if its done under warranty. If not you would probably have to gamble! Sorry I can't be more help!

They are a very whiney turbo to start with.

Might not be anything wrong with it but getting it checked out wont hurt.

Mine used to whine a fair bit when on full chat and ive done over 20k in it and had no problems. Whines even more now the EGR is blanked off too.

my turbo was replaced in 2nd year of warranty as i complained about it being whiney. they asked no questions and did it. the new(recon) turbo sounds exactly the same, has done since the day they fitted it. are all you peeps running uprated panel filters? as i am, and its a hell of alot quieter with a standard fiat air filter. there alot thicker and dampen the noise quite alot

Yeah mine has an abarth bmc filter in. Can no longer hear turbo noise due to EGR noise lol.

heres a brief list of whats been replaced...

gearbox
clutch + bearing
new battery due to low voltage
steering wheel
gearknob
both front leather seats
egr
egr heat exchanger
its in today having passenger wishbone+ exhaust rubber mount
aux belt and tensioner
front pads
modified rear caliper mounts to stop whining
abs sensor
drivers side rear window due to seal falling to bits
inside of rear hatch resprayed due to corrosion
dash vent trimmed glued down
top mounts
gearbox mount
horn lubed so it actually works
steering column checked on recall
passenger front wheel hubdue to not beingable to tighten wheel nuts

sure theres more, but cnt remember them all. out of the 3.5 years ive owned the car, im pretty sure its been in the dealership at least 6months of my ownership, a ball ache, but so far has cost me nothing, most stuff done within first 3 years of warranty, then i paid £299 to extend warranty till may 2012. and no sooner had i extended it, the gearbox was done :) circa £1700 for a gearbox lol. cant fault dealership, theyve bent over backwards to sort things. so cant complain, trouble(cost) free motoring for 4 years lol

and then on that list, theres the parts ive fitted to keep it in as good condition as poss:

droplinks
eibach springs
changed the oil and filter every 4000 miles ontop of the yearly service at the dealer
new shocks
braided brake hoses all round

egr noise? i had mine blanked and it didnt make noise...just made engine light come on. i removed the blank, once i realised what damage blanking it off can do. and personally i dont want to create more nox gases

Six and two threes really, can do damage standard and blanked. Personally I prefer it blanked, very rare you read of any problems caused by blanking egr valve off. Mines going back to be mapped out completely in the new year.

Long as you service it properly and don't give it stick 24/7 there should be no problem blanking it off.

so what is this noise you refer to? mine was completely blanked for a short while and it sounded and felt no different tbh.

Its hard to describe. Basically imagine the turbo whine louder and more whistle like, similar to a boost leak. I will try and get a video of it.

It feels like it picks up a tad better from bottom end but that may just be placebo effect. My main reason for blanking it off was it was causing lots of kangarooing no matter how clean it was, blanked it off and the problem disappeared.

cheers for input fellas...

Fiat had a quick listen to it and said it was definately louder than it should be. Its not under warranty, just wanted their opinion - wont be shelling out on their prices!

Im gonna get hoses checked and see if turbo fins look damaged or any play in shaft at all.

Would be good if anyones got a sound clip of what a "normal" one should sound like - anyone?

Is there anything that can be put on to stop crap getting into the turbo - gauze or something?

did it sound as bad as this before and after?

My 1.3 does it but much less loud than that, you can hear it inbetween songs of a CD and that's about it. I just thought it was normal. If it went that loud though, seems a bit strange.

Yes It was exactly the same. Sounded pretty awesome in multi stories! But I don't really know what to suggest apart from whats in my first post and other peoples opinions on here.

Way I look at it is if you get it done, you then have a piece of mind that if it were to die, the turbo would be covered by a warranty that the garage offer.

Unfortunately, I don't think that there is a definitive answer to this problem because some are just like it as I think mine was and it was fine for the time I owned it ( 1 year 6 months ) I have heard Multipla's around my area with the same sound or a panda.. Can't remember which!

Sooo.. That my opinion. Im afraid it's a difficult one and you will just have to decide. Luckily, I had a month of warranty left so I got it on that. Cost me around the £790ish mark I think.. long time ago though!

I would say mine is louder than that. If it goes bang then I will get another for it off ebay. Not like it isn't fitted to plenty of different models.
