Technical Dreaded cold start :(

Right, sensor is back on and battery is being an hour disconnected.

However, I think the starting problem is still there.

The grinding has gone, but the car still 'puffs' into life, sometimes with a squeak (sounds like a belt) and this morning, there was a loud sort of bang which shook the car. Bit like tapping but really hard.

Im getting a bad feeling regarding starting the car now, maybe this is something worse?

See this is the thing mate.

If it happend every time, yeah I would say auxilliary belt too tight.

But its not, its now and again so its a bitch to pin point.

As for map sensor, if it really is faulty, the engine seems to be working fine so therefore would I be okay just to erase the error?

bit of a bump really,

but can anyone confirm whether I can delete this error?

i mean the car seems fine, but would I actually notice anything physically if the map sensor was not working or would combustion just not be as efficient?

thanks :)

No worries sam If you plug it in to the code reader depending on the "quality/spec/type" of your mates reader a simple test for the temp sensor is to see the output from it and whilst plugged in with the engine running use a hair drier to blow warm air into the air intake (air in take is that pipe that we spotted cable tied ;-) ) after a few mins see if the temperature reading alters (or the voltage) or if it stays constant or gives a silly reading it could be the sensor (try your old one then to see what happens (y)

Sorry its a bit off topic, i was browsing on here as i had similiar issues now and again.

AndyMonty, My Punto decided to die on the A1 a couple weeks ago when going from a 50 back up to 70. It just cut out. I dropped gear because i was in 6th and engine just cut out and then it came back to life with engine management light on, an hour later the light dissapeared. I was wondering if it happens again would i be able to use your diagnostic as i live in goole? :) my mate works at stoneacre but hes done too many favours to too many of his mates and wont help anyone anymore :/

Sorry again Sam :)

Cheers
Kyle

mate, no worries, it's what the forum is for :)

Well i dont think the map sensor has worked (if it is working) just had a horrible grind again.

I think this may well be a much deeper problem such as starter motor or something.

What you reckon guys :(

My Map sensor seems to be working, no grinding noises. My friend also has a grande punto and he had the grinding noise, but instead of buying a Map sensor he turns the ignition on, lets the light go out and then turns it of, then turns the ignition back on, let the lights go out and then turns the engine on. Seems to have worked on his apparently.

thanks elliot

i alread let the lights go out but have not turned it off and back on for a second time so will give that a try.

although i would prefer a more definitive fix, anything to stop these silly cold start problems.

It's especially bad when you park in multi level car parking and you start the engine, only to scare the s*** out of people walking past when it grinds....

Right next steps:

1. iv checked the map sensor all pins seem fine, today i will put the old one back in and see if the light goes out.

2. if the light goes out, i will order another map sensor and see if the starting problem continues

3. if the problem continues, i will then order a new battery.

Should i order the sensor from the same place? elliot ross got it from the same place and seems to have resolved his issue so i dont think its the seller
