Hello you wonderful people,

My 2008 1.3 Mjet 75BHP is playing up a little bit.

Recently I had no end of problems with glow plugs and relays - but that has all now been sorted (for only a few hundred ££s)

The new problem is the other day I was driving along in 2nd, just accelerating to change up to 3rd and suddenly the car lost power like the turbo had given up. This was accompanied by a loud beep, a "check engine" message and the orange engine light coming on.

I carried on for the next 100 miles or so and it continued to drive fine, except for having no turbo power - not sure if this is called Limp home mode?

Anyway, was just wondering if anyone has any idea what might be causing it and what the best way forwards is. My local garage seems to be stumped and just says he has turned the light off because he can't find anything wrong with the car... Useful as always! Unfortunately the same thing happens again on most journeys - and the orange warning light only goes out after about 4 restarts.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

A number of things can send the car into limp mode. Loose pipes, broken electrics, if the car detects so much of a hint of anything wrong, it will kick it into limp mode.

If you're concerned about the actual turbo being bust though, you can check if it is just limp mode by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes to reset the ECU, then starting the car and driving it. It should feel normal again until you put the engine under a bit of load, say half throttle, and then it will put it in limp mode again. If that is the case, the car is sensing that something is wrong. Did the garage run diagnostics on the car? Because that may hint at whats wrong.

Hello DlightSwitch,

Thank you so much for your reply.

After a few restarts the light does go off and each time I turn the car off and back on, the turbo seems to function correctly again.

This leads me to believe it isn't necessarily a turbo problem as it functions a lot of the time and intermittently stops working when I am accelerating (usually hard).

Does this narrow down what it could be?

Thank you again for your help.

Your garage should be able to read a fault code from the ecu. This should narrow it down significantly.

Thanks James,

Have put it in with a local garage today and hope we find out what is causing it.

Basically have worked out that the turbo drops out at about 2,500 RPM and he thinks it's a dump valve?

Anyway, will wait and see what happens - hope warranty covers it! Will keep you posted.

Hope that don't happen to me, it will be one slow ****ing car without that turbo. Well it still is, but even slower!

You're not joking - I got overtaken by a steam train the other day... Bloody Dorset steam fair!

They're not that quick to start with - bloody annoying slowing down from 70mph to 40mph every time there's a hill on the motorway!

I have an update!

Have put the car in with the local garage (not a fiat dealer) today and he is saying the code that is being read is:

P0234 Engine Boost Condition - Limit Exceeded.

Any ideas on what could be causing this / likely cost of repair?

Hopefully not the turbo itself?

Thank you.

Hi, I had a problem very similar to this, it turned out to be one of the injectors
