Posting this on behalf of the missus - it's her account..

She seems to be getting about 52-55mpg average out of my 1.3 MJET punto, does this sound about right for mostly motorway driving?

It's the 90bhp version with the 6 speed gearbox, at what consistant speed will this give the best MPG? I'm used to a 5 speed box in my ZR TD, this gives superb MPG at 60mph on a run, better than the punto at the moment!

Will the MJ90 be labouring at 60mph is 6th gear? The rev drop from 5th to 6th doesn't seem to be that large to be honest, it's more of an overdrive gear.

What sort of driving would people recommend to get the highest MPG possible out of the car? I can get 57mpg out of my ZR with a bit of effort, so the punto should easily be able to equal or better this i'd have thought.

Cheers
Charles

The Grande is heavier than the ZR and its engine must be tighter too. The 1.3 MJet is a high output/small engine combo, unlike the ZR. I have the 1.9 MJet, I hit 57mpg at 60mph on 28 mile round-trip (Swansea-Llanelli), 50mpg at 70mph, and 48mpg at 75-80mph. Texaco techron and BP ultimate give me more mpg than Shell V-power and Total Excellium, supermarket diesel gives considerably less mpg still! Try the Grande at 60 mph on the motorway, you should hit 60mpg. Check tyre pressures and ensure you clear the car of any clatter. Switch the air-con off, close all windows. When was the last time the car was serviced? Are you using the correct oil grade? Is the EGR valve functioning properly? Does the car have DPF? Using 6th gear should not make the car return worse mpg, as far as I can tell from the 1.9 MJet she gives best mpg at 1600-1900 rpm. I still however suspect that you will never better your MG's fuel consumption, modern cars seldom achieve the EC extra urban on the motorway. Hope you make sense out of all that...;)

Yup, all makes sense! I've done a fair bit of tinkering with my diesel so i know my way around them, but mine is an older direct injection diesel. The punto MJ90 is a smaller common rail eco diesel.

EGR operation seems fine, warmup times are what you would expect from an engine of that displacement (warms up twice as fast as the ZR!). Have to confess i have no idea about DPF filters but i know these are something of a pain, can they be removed?

The car has had a recent oil change, although i suspect the tyre pressures are not optimum. I'll look at that at the next oppertunity.

The concern i had with using 6th on the motorway at ~60mph was that you need a reasonable amount of throttle to maintain speed up hills, foot down in too high a gear normally = rubbish MPG, but for all i know the punto could be fairly happy with this pace in top gear.

I was fairly impressed with the on-boost torque that this engine creates, when you finally spool the turbo it moves fairly well. I suspect the turbo is a bit big for the engine to be quite honest, a VNT with lag below 2k rpm is an odd combination.

What are other MJ90 owners getting? Fag-packet maths suggest the car should easily be capable of 60mpg on a run if driven progressively.

My 1.3 Mjet averages about 50mpg and that's not doing motorway driving. I short shift a lot mind and coast down the many hills that we have here in South Wales :)

Is yours the MJ75 or 90? I'm led to believe there is a lot less turbo lag on the 75bhp version despite it using a fixed-vane turbocharger.

The car has only done about 50k and seems fairly healthy mechanically. The only thing i have noticed is a fairly noticable plume of smoke on startup, this can sometimes equal my tuned ZR TD!

It's the 75. It is '09 plate and has nearly 39k on the clock. I've only had it a few weeks. I also get a plume on some start ups, twice since having it on firing up it's not wanted to know for about 2 seconds, let the key back to MAR and fire again and it starts straight away. But there's a plume on those occassions. Don't know what that is?!?!

I didn't even know my MJet had a turbo :-/ Haha. Out of interest what ia a fixed0vane turbo charger? I have Googled but not getting a lot of helpful info!

On the motorway? I'd get well over 60 if I drove at 70 but that's boring. I got less MPG on a two hour motorway journey than I do driving round town because average speed was 88MPH. Motorway driving is so boring! I topped up after the journey and worked it out that I got about 40MPG. Always get more than that round town.

Lol.

Around town it's about 43mpg, motorway about 50mpg but I stick to the limit, no point in going over as the mpg really suffers because of the gearing.

I got 75-80mpg in my old derv at 80mph, and 65mpg at 90mph.

Mine 1.3mtj 75hp , with 17'' alloys , consumes in urban cycle around 6.5Lit/100km
