right so ive had my new stainless steel cat back exhaust today, had no fancy tip put on the end as im keeping the car stealth looking ;)
anyway i want to do the rest of the exhaust in a few months and wonder if my car would pass a mot with it de-catted or should i go for a sports cat?
the car is a 1.4 16v non turbo.
cheers :D

To be blunt with you, no you wouldn't pass an MOT. The Catalytic Converter reduces the 'harmful' gases from the exhaust, and without it, your car would be over the stated emissions threshold.

It's not worth it on non turbo cars really, especially not your 1.4, sure it will make the exhaust less restrictive, but you're unlikely to gain much power from it.

Also, sports cats are really expensive, and will be just as futile, might as well save your money for a better car :)

Why do you want a decat? You will lose power and torque and look like a tvvat because you will have a stupid loud car that takes forever to get to the end of the road your showing off down.

well on the longlife exhausts website it says many newer cars are so emissions friendly that you can remove the cat and still pass a mot which is why i asked.
also why would the car lose power? it would make the exhaust less restrictive and i knoe loads of saxos with power gains from decat pipes, i even had a vtr myself with a decat running 115bhp at the wheels ;)

Why ask if you dont believe us? Cars are that emissions friendly because of the cat! If your car is meant to have a cat, goes for an MOT and doesnt have one then it will fail on that reason a lone regardless of whether or not it meets regs. Less restrictive isnt always better, you need some back pressure there to force the gasses out through the exhaust otherwise they wont go anywhere and lose you power. Saxo's dont use the same engines as Fiats do they? Every car reacts a different way and each car needs a specific exhaust. I mean sure go decat your car if you want, but your not gonna make it any quicker.

When i had my mjet mapped they recomened decatting to get the best power gains. He said because it's a diesal it would still pass on emmisions, don't no if this it true for fiats but a lad at work has got a vw passat decatted and mapped and he passed his mot last week. He said he just took it out and give it a good blow out before it got tested.

As regards doing it to naturaly aspirated 1.4 i am with punto matt really not worth the small gains you will get. Can't see the point in spending hundreds of pounds on mods and then a load more money on increased insurance to make a slow car slightly faster. I would be suprised if you even get a 10% increase in power of that exhaust.

Matt's right (he usually is tbh). You may gain 1-3bhp at PEAK but in the course of doing so you loose more power over more of the rev range making the car very peaky (You have to keep the rev's at peak power to make good progress) and useless on the road.

Trust me I did the same on the same engine in a different car (Mk2b Sporting) and the results were not good at all :(.

Sports cats are the way to go to get more flow. They keep some of the back pressure in the exhaust and keep the exhaust gas / pulse resonance more in line with what the factory standard engine is designed for. Even then you need supporting mods to get the best out of them (induction kit, remap, higher lift cams?).

I have induction kit, remap and cams but I just can't seem to get round to buying a manifold with sports cat I always spend my money on other stuff . Mainly because with £300-£500 I can extract 100bhp out of my Fiat Coupe as apposed to 10bhp-15bhp in punto

i did want high lift cams but cant find any for my engine! performance parts are hard to come by for the 1.4 16v so if anyone knows where i can get uprated cams etc.. please let me know :)

if i had to have it custom made i wouldnt bother anyway. the car is financed so i have to keep it another 4 years anyway hence the reason for me trying to find things to do to it ;)

And what do the finance company have to say about you carrying out pretty involved mods and alterations to THEIR CAR??.........or dont you think it matters?
