Hello,
I have recetly bought a 1.2 2006 grande Punto.. 3 times this week the power steering has turned off and the steering become very heavy.. It returns to normal when engine off for a short while and then restarted.. When the steering becomes heavy a sign on the dash also appears Power Steering Fault...Having read some reports on the internet it appears this is a common problem and will only become more frequent with time.. A refurbished Power Steering Unit appears to cost around £250 on line....Will a replacement PSU cure my problem... Can I fit it myself quite easily or do Fiat have to calobrate or recode anything... Is it dangerous to drive the car if the power steering keeps switching off????..:)

Hi welcome to the foum

first start with the absolute Basics and check the battery clamps are tight and clean also check the engine earth strap on the battery to the chassis for high resistance or an internal break

Also get the battery and alternator tested... (if its still on the original battery i would change it mine (1.2 06 plate) went in November time

You will need the PAS column calibrating by a dealer (not sure if Fiat ECU scan will allow you to do it yourself)

And yes it does make the car dangerous if your going round a sharp bend and it cuts out there is the chance it will end up in the hedge or wall

Thanks for the advice Andy.. I have checked all you advised and appears ok..Surely if this a common problem and could potentialy cause a serious accident fiat should have recalled all affected models for a modification...
Are you aware of any such recall??
Thanks

I've got the EXACT same issue with my 06 Grande Punto. It pulls slightly to the left which I assume is no real issue, but it's as if whenever the car is in a straight line and no actual steering as such is required, the steering wheel wobbles… and then we have cut out of power steering. As you have said restarting the car does seem to rectify the issue, but it is quite unnerving when it turns off going round roundabouts and the like. The steering column bearings have been recently replaced so I can't imagine it being them causing the issue. Any ideas?

George
