I was driving in Richmond on Tuesday and to my surprise I see a police car flashing its lights at me!!! I was only driving at 20mph. After I pulled over and the officer came across to my car, first he said that it was a routine check but the first thing he asked me was whether I was the owner of the car and that I need to prove that I am who I say I am!!! He implied that it was stolen!!!

I told him that I had insurance etc etc, he said he already knows, ie from his car computer before he even pulled me over.

It didn't help that I had removed a dash panel just to the right of the ignition area, He became very suspicious. He thought I hot-wired the car! But obviously I had my key in the ignition and I showed him my id. He said: "good thing you have the key with you."

After all the checks he finally handed back my documents and simply said that everything is in order. He didn't even tell me why he thought it was stolen in the first place. I mean seriously WTF!!!

But to be fair the officer was very polite throughout.

Cheers, it's really easy actually, just smile and pretend you actually own the car!!! Just give Big Mickey a ring, he'll sort you out!
I think I would have been better off if I actually did steal the car!
The officer prob thought..."A 1.2 punto....it must be stolen!"

Wow you got lucky!!!

Take it you have never been pulled over before? He wasnt accusing you of anything, people are allowed to drive cars they dont own no?

I'm sure they are standard questions, but why on earth would he pull me over in the first place when:
1; he already checked all the details on his computer when he was tailing me and everything checked out, and
2; I didn't commit any traffic violations whatsoever, I'd understand if I was speeding but that wasn't the case.

He had no reasonable grounds to pull me over and if the car was stolen, I would've reported it as stolen. I think my WTF!!! is justified.

Not really.

Just because he has checked everything on the computer doesnt mean the driver is who its meant to be, just because it hasnt been reported stolen it doesnt mean its not. You would be moaning even more if it did get stolen and they didnt pull it over.

Personally I suggest a Chill-pill. If your car had been stolen the "Coppers nose" would have been something you would be grateful for. He was suspicious, he can stop you for that alone... no probs as long as all is in order.

As dave said, "is this your car sir / madam" is a standard question, he can tell when you speak if you had a beer or two etc. You checked out just fine... I'm glad Plod are doing their job!

they don't need any reason to pull you over

You cant know that... he may have had a report of a car like yours with a similar reg number, stolen or involved in some illegal activity & he thought a stop was worthwhile.

I was pulled over by a traffic cop once. The fool thought I was drink/drunk driving!

He asked me all the usual rubbish and my answers seemed to be the ones he was looking for.

What got me caught though, was the fact that I was naked, operating the pedals with my hands, steering with my feet, and changing gear with my *****.

pics or it didnt happen :p

Like everyone says, pretty standard questions.

I got pulled over once and the copper asked me all that, then asked me why I was lying and why I was driving without insurance. Then turned into a shouting match where I told him I did have insurance, asked him if he wanted to see the policy and he said 'Never mind'.

OK I do appreciate that he was doing his job because as you said if it really was stolen then the car would've been recovered. Makes sense about a similar car being reported.

Also it was a narrow road where you have to occasionally give way as there are cars arked on the road, so driving at 20mph wasn't exactly dangerous.

Just wished he properly explained to my why. Like I said before the officer was very polite.

lol think you were a bit concious that you had your panel missing rather than the copper bothered by it.

They pull you over for anything and everything, some explain why some don't, joys of driving and im assuming your young as well which also imo make you more susceptable to being pulled.

even been pulled over for the reason of 'you looked suspicious' driving from my college back in the day.

Mate, wait till you get 3 points and a fine for using a phone that was non-existant...then and only then you will realise they do not need to explain their reasons for asking whatever they want ;)

This is not reprentative of the police force, I just had a weird policeman

 Let me get this right... you were done for using a phone while driving, that you claim didnt exist?

You had a cast iron defence, the phone company records would show if you were using a phone at the time, day & date.... even the rough location....

I'm confused.... help me understand...
