Hi,

My wife's car (A 1.2 '57 plate Punto) has been in the garage for 2 weeks now, it's had 3 new starter motors and still it has the same fault. On starting the car - a screeching sound is heard. Now, it can be cold, wet and sunny and will start first time. Other times, no luck and just keep screeching on starting.

The garage has said they need to remove the gearbox and look at the flywheel as it could be damaged.

Can anyone help us please or give any ideas, I've checked the common problem of Water onto the belt and it's dry as anything in the engine.

Truly frustrating, otherwise the car has been solid,

Kind regards,

Andrew

Engines stops in one of two places so the same bits of flywheel ring gear get hit every other time. Take the starter off and look at the gear teeth inside the clutch cover. To rule out the alternator slacken the fan belt and see if the screech stops

Try searching the Grande Punto section- its been asked many times, and answered. ;)

Poor Battery voltage, ECU software update, etc. Nothing to do with aux belt.

TBH, if the garage were any good, they'd have inspected the ring gear when they removed the starter motor. No need to remove the gearbox to inspect the flywheel- 15mins tops and they'll be able to tell if its knackered or not.
