should i change transmission oil??

Hey.
I am a bit confused.
I am living i Denmark and got a GP 1.3 Multijet 5 speed.
My transmission is having problems going into every gear, when i have been driving for about 20-30 min.
I thought of changing the transmission oil, but there is no service of transmission oil in my handbook (i should not be changed or checked)
But in the download section i downloaded the handbook for Grande punto, and it says that the oil should be changed every 60.000 km or 2 year.

What am I to belive???

Sorry for my spelling.

Re: should i change transmission oil??

if you have a Manual gear box its not ment to be changed for about 60,000 miles iirc (fiat workshop manual says its a life time lubricant and only needs to be drained if you plan to work on the gear box....

have you checked the gear oil level?

should be similar to this

https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-pun...ml#post2747204

the Brake fluid is ment to be changed at 2 year intervals not seen anything about the transmission/ gear oil.....

Re: should i change transmission oil??

Andy, the advice you have provided reads sound, but also contradictory.

Sorry, I don't mean to start a ruckus but the statement that the gearbox oil shouldn't be changed and is "for life" according to the fiat workshop manual vs. it should be changed every 60K, obviously counter each other.

I've just bought into a 1.3M-Jet which requires a major service and I'm pulling my hair trying to work out what oil the gearbox requires. If the gearbox oil has a 60K lifespan, then 06-08 cars are now easily reaching this mileage milestone, which means this should be of interest for people with above 60K mileage on their cars. Mine is at 79.5K.

There is little to no information out there about the gearbox maintenance schedule, oil viscosity, type, etc. Some forum members report that the Engine and Gearbox are fed from the engine's sump (i.e. one oil source), which may or may not be correct, I'm still trying to establish if this is true, hence the reason for the "for life" statement because if this holds true, then effectively the gearbox oil is changed every time the engine oil is changed.

SAE 75W-85 grade synthetic base lubricant.
FIAT 9.55550-MX3 certification

1.7 kg of fluid (dont ask me why fiat dont use liquid measurements for it or the brake fluid

from thomas post here

Every 72,000 Miles Or 48 Months

https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-pun...ing-guide.html

that covers the 1.2 petrol if you have the service book it should be in there for you to confirm

Re: should i change transmission oil??

Andy,

I just bought into GP ownership and its a third owner car. Unfortunately the second hand dealer couldn't provide me with an owner's manual for that car, hence all my questions here, until I can find one to buy online.

The thread I started about the state of affairs of my GP can be found here https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-pun...nde-punto.html

as far as I'm aware the majority of liquids are 1:1 ratio of kg vs. litre, so 1.7 shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.

Thanks I will look into that grade of oil.

Difficulty engaging gear could be gearbox if oil level is low. Check the oil level. If low, you should also see the leak. This needs to be fixed.

Problems could be due to a clutch fault.
Oil on clutch, from gearbox or engine.
Clutch fluid leak, or slave cylinder fault causing the clutch to not properly disengage.
Water in clutch fluid, heating up from engine heat, causing clutch to not properly disengage.

When warm, can you engage reverse? This should be less affected by lack of oil. If it engages ok, fault with others could be oil level low. If reverse won't engage or crunches, clutch is not disengaging properly.

Whatever the recommendation, changing the oil can do no harm, if the right oil is used. DO NOT use EP gear oil, (smells of sulphur) as this will make gear engagement difficult. When checking oil level, smell it. If you smell sulphur, change it as that would suggest the wrong stuff has been put in and could cause your problem.

The link I posted above is the OEM transmission fluid, so if in doubt check it matches what's listed at the back of the owners manual
