Hi guys,

My 57' 1.2 active does not hold when in 1st gear, engine off on a hill. It jolts backwards!

Just wondered if anyone knows what the problem is?

Thanks :)

does it jolt backward regardless of if it is facing up or down hill?

It's not the handbrake, that's working fine!!

I've not tried it on downhill, but you wouldn't be in 1st gear downhill anyway?

so its when you're moving not when parked? but you said engine off?!

can you give some more information?? not exactly clear.

lol sorry!!

The engine is off, the car is in first gear on a hill (front of the car facing top of the hill) so uphill. Handbrake is off all feet off pedals, the car jolts backwards.

Just sounds like the slack being taken up to me. All cars roll a tiny bit before they stop in gear. Maybe your fiat just has more slack than you are used to.

As an aside; I was always taught to park a car in reverse if facing up hill and 1st if facing down hill so as not to try and force the engine to rotate the wrong way. I dought it matters, the thing isn't going to fire eitherway.

From the highway code:

Parking on hills. If you park on a hill you should
  • park close to the kerb and apply the handbrake firmly
  • select a forward gear and turn your steering wheel away from the kerb when facing uphill
  • select reverse gear and turn your steering wheel towards the kerb when facing downhill
  • use ‘park’ if your car has an automatic gearbox

"The engine is off, the car is in first gear on a hill (front of the car facing top of the hill) so uphill. Handbrake is off all feet off pedals, the car jolts backwards."

Loose nut in cockpit.

Actually, if you take all the spark plugs out, the car will roll freely down the hill backwards, in first gear with the engine off. Hope this helps.

its only a 1.2 there is not a great deal of compression in one of these compared to a diesel, there is not a fault just the car is not holding due to you having it gear and rolling down a hill which turns the engine over.
