Hi . iv only had the car for a few months now. Grande Punto 1.3 multijet 75 diesel. The problem is the GEAR change, when the car is cold on start-up the 1st gear is a little hard to put in to and the reverse is the same, but after i run it for some miles then it gets harder to put into 1st and no gear grinding noise , however putting it into reverse aswell is a big problem with lots of grinding and being hard. i had its MOT done by the fiat dealer a couple months ago and they said its the Clutch, i thought its the gear box? which could it be? anyone know? could it be something els perhaps? or am i gana have to cough up a few ££££ for it? lol.

thanks

could be either but one way or another the gearbox is coming out, without witnessing the fault its hard to say
Thanks for the reply.
I understand it can be hard to tell without witnessing it, I just wanted to know if I could get any help on here.
The problem seems to be weird because I only seem to have a problem with the 1st gear and the reverse gear.

Thanks :O)

IIRC - If i remember correctly.

Where are you from aswell, my dad has a garage, he could maybe diagnose for you.
im in south manchester. to be honest i cant afford to take it for check-up in any garage, im kinda broke now adays. i usually try to fix the car myself, but if i cant then i just dont drive it lol.

In my manual it says all forward gears have sycro, Althought the amount of effort it takes to get mine in first sometimes i wouldn't have believed it.

may be way out here ..but 1 problem we had on a certain gearbox in a truck ,which we had a bulletin about so the manufacturer did recognise the issue was much the same difficulty with 1st and reverse ...and it was the clutch at fault ..for our diagnosis from the manufacturer ,we where told depress the clutch ,count to 10 i think may have been 5 lol.then try to select 1st ..if it was still grinding renew clutch ..basically the count was to give the shaft time to slow down ...though if my grande had the symptoms as described .i'd remove the box and make sure the friction plate was moving smoothly on the input shaft splines ..afterall 'if the plate can't move smoothly on the splines you won't have proper clutch seperation ,which then leads to knackered synchros ..and i don't know about fiat ,but from experience that leads to blueing of the synchros due to heat which manufacturers use as a warranty rejection as it is classed as driver abuse .ie clutch seperation

hi. i have just bought a 2006 (56 plate) fiat grande punto 1.3 cdti. i was told that a new clutch has been fitted... it passed mot 2 weeks ago with no problems. when i picked it up it drove perfectly. now, when i reverse the reverse gear grinds unless i pull it really hard! the other gears are very stiff however they dont grind. any ideas?

i had a problem once with a corsa that had the lift up reverse gear lever. if you remove the leather gather around the gear stick, i think you need to take the plastic surround off aswell, probably some plastic clips underneath. anyway once this is removed you can see the lift up reverse mechanism, well on the corsa i had to shave abit off the plastic guide to allow the 1st gear to be engaged without any resistance. did the trick for me with that car. this was probably caused from wear and tear in the gear box, i know its not the best solution but its worth a go.

It's harder to put the car in a gear when it's cold, as the gearbox oil becomes thick and sluggy, so when its drove for a few miles it should get thinner, there for if that dosent work I would say clutch or synchro or maybe cable
