Technical abs, esp, & hill holder failure

Hello all,

Last week I had an intermittent fault of the ABS, ESP, & Hillholder unavalible. Whenever I restarted the engine the lights would tend to go off for the rest of the day.

Now when I start the engine the lights and error message are constantly showing.

Is this a problem anyone else has had, and found a definate fix?

Would it just be replace an ABS wheel sensor? (Rough cost if anyone knows)

Or could it be a different electrical fault?

If I called the AA out would they be able to diagnose the problem and suggest a fix?

My wife owns a GP Sporting and has had the hill holder unavailable message numerous times.
Fiat looked at it a couple of times but to no avail.still comes on every now and again :-(
Unfortunately if your GP is as reliable as ours this will be the first of many nigling faults

Yep. Same for me, get ready for the fun of Fiat GP ownership. Not so much with this GPS but my previous GPS occasionally had this fault.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

I have tried (when safe) and I dont have any ABS, so presume the ASR isnt working either.
Ive tried https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-pu...water-ingress-corrosion-connection-block.html but there was no rust or water

Does anyone have any ideas/things I can look for before I start spending money?
Car Warrenty ran out in January. If there is a cost involved, do you think FiatUK will contribute?

Probably resting her foot on the clutch pedal while driving! thats what people find triggers it.

Even though your not actually depressing the clutch, it seems so sensitive, and triggers the "hill holder" message.

Mine is showing all these problems. Had the car into the fiat dealers, they had it on the diag machine and came up with low voltage at ABS sensor. Told me to replace the battery (which as it happens was due to be replaced). Got this done but didnt fix the issue. Told me that it could be sensor, wiring or pump. Would have to have the car for a day to check (hmm at what cost??) To be honest, the car drives fine, just dont have ABS etc so its like driving a pre early 90's car. Will get it fixed eventually but have more pressing matters such as a top mount clonking and brake pads to be changed.

One point of note though, before the ABS etc failed I had a knocking noise behind the steering column (thought the column was failing). Now the ABS has conked out the knocking noise has gone so really got one extra problem but got rid of one too. Ah the ups and downs of FIAT ownership. Done 10k in 4.5 months so it does get some hammer!

Check the abs connecter behind the fuse box, black rectangle with a flip up plastic handle. Prone for moisture getting in their and causing issues.

Have already checked, and there is no moisture or corrosion

Check the switch on the brake pedal.

An ABS sensor costs around £45 if that's the problem.

I've just had some wiring cut out because of water corrosion.

Be very careful what garage you go to!!!

All the lights are still on, but everything seems to be working. ABS, ASR.

Could this just be low battery?

07 plate - 47,000 miles.

yep i have still got the same problem, checked my fuse box (under bonnet) and the bottom section was badly water damaged. Think there are some fuses there which look after the braking system/ air con panel and fuel pump. Might go someway to being an issue. Have asked the question on here regarding fuse box removal but no body has got back to me yet.

I have had the ABS/ESP/Hill Hold error message twice in two months of ownership. Both while moving very slowly (less than 1mph), parking in tight garage and creeping out of an unsighted junction. The very low speeds cause the wheel speed sensors to send only very occasional signals, my theory is that the ABS/ESP system interoperates this as a fault and triggers warning. This always clears with an engine restart and does not get progressively worse; I suspect this is quite different from the OPers problem.

I have also in the past had an ABS warning on a Peugeot when a screw had caused one of the tyres to partially deflate. The wheel was then effectively a different diameter to the others and rotated faster hence the error. This is the principal on which some of the less sophisticated tyre pressure monitoring systems operate. It may be worth checking that one tyre is not slowly loosing pressure.

boddahchris has got it spot on, if it comes on it is because the clutch has slight pressure on it, take foot off the clutch completely and the light will go out

this happened to me when the hill holder was "in action" n i pressed the brake again slightly n it was hard then it clicked as if the hill holder went off then i got the failure message, also 1 night i had my main beam on cd player (inc subs and amp) n when i turned my fogs on (HIDS) the message come up, n when i turned them off it went off, i stopped at a junction and it cut out and wouldnt start as if the battery was flat, tried after 5 mins n it was fine, got to work and tested the battery, tested the charge rate and everything was fine and never had a problem since :S

How strange. Mine started of as an intermittent problem. But i know have the constant unavalible message on start up. And constant lights on the dash. Abs Definently still works though.
Im due new pads and disks, could this play a part?

i think a common problem if its always on and possibly the cheapest is the sensor on the pedal, id check fuses n if they are fine try the sensor.

This happened to me alongside with the power steering failing. I've tried removing and charging the battery, still the same. Took it to an Arnold Clark garage today, Paid £81.60 to get it checked out, turns out its a failed steering shaft and quoted me £965 to fix :bang:
