35.5 mpg

I drive a 07 GPS Diesel, and never seem to get amazing MPGs from her!

I travel 5 miles to work each day, with the occasional 20 mile trip up the A1.
Trip computer seems to be constantly stuck at 35.5mpg, travelled up to birmingham at the weekend and the average rose to 38 (I know I should have reset the trip computer before the drive to get a better figure but forgot)
I dont drive with lead boots.

Ive cleaned the EGR valve twice, no warnings on dash, presume performance is fine, never been in another GPS (happy to accept an offer if anyone is around Hertfordshire)

Can anyone offer any suggestions/solutions to the problem, or do I just need to drive further distances to see any benefits?

Thanks

Change to a petrol, over short distances like that the diesel engine won't be getting up to temperature and won't be anywhere near as efficient as it could be.

Clio 197 won't get a great mpg but that's because it's a hot hatch and to be expected where as the GPS 1.9 should be getting 45+.

Yeah I know, but the short journeys arent going to kill me on fuel!

Back onto Fiats!
Any ideas about the stupidly low MPGs, bar the short journeys?

eklipze already gave you the only viable answer, diesel needs to be warmed up before it can run at optimum performance.

Re: 35.5 mpg

Your fuel consumption is typical of the breed, I get the same in town, I've even seen 28mpg once! mid 30s mpg is normal for the driving you are doing, hence the consensus that petrol works out cheaper in town driving. Motorway driving at 70-80 mph should give 45-50mpg over a distance of more than 50 miles, this is where diesel is superior to petrol. I don't want to sound patronising, but I feel you chose the wrong engine for your car, given the amount of miles you are doing I feel you would be better off with a T-Jet. No offence, just my thoughts on the subject matter.
Thanks Eklipze3k thanked for this post

Thanks for your reply, the low mpgs isn't an issue in terms of money on fuel, just thought I might be getting more. Used to do a lot of high mileage driving, but not anymore.(anyone fancy a swap? Haha)
No problems with the car atall. Just thought there might be a underlying issue.

Thanks for the input guys.

I get about 36.5 on a similar journey so as others have said it is about right. Hoped for a bit more bit it is still 10+ mpg more than my Punto HGT gave me.

Re: 35.5 mpg

These figures are crazy! Ive had mine nearly 3 week now and not seen it go below 39mpg and that was only once. In a morning i do a 8 mile journey to work where it only just gets up to temperature and it will do 43mpg all day long.

Once warmed up its even better!

Re: 35.5 mpg

At the moment you are using winter diesal, this has additives in it to stop it waxing in very cold weather, once the summer is back your comsumption will rise.

In the summer i was getting 39-41 mpg on short runs now this is down to 36-38 mpg. Also in the winter the engine block is colder and takes longer to warm up so you use more fuel. I have just stopped looking at my average mpg to depressing.

hope this helps.
