All of a sudden a couple of days ago my car began to take a few goes to start. I would turn the key and it would sound like it was going to start normally but then would just go dead. I have changed the battery hoping this would solve it but again this morning it took about 3/4 goes before it worked. Once it has started then it is fine throughout the day. It is only when I leave it overnight and try and start it again in the morning that it has the problem.

The weather is currently about 0 degrees and it was certainly a lot colder over Christmas when it was snowing but it was fine then. I even left it on my path for a few days over Christmas and it still worked fine.

No lights or messages appear so it doesnt give me any clue what it might be, has anyone got any ideas?

I assume the engine coolant / anti freeze levels are fine?

Thanks for the reply. How would I check these? (Sorry, I know absolutely nothing about cars!)
Not sure about other Punto's but in the diesel version it's on the front right (when looking at the car under the bonnet - bright pink/red liquid.
I'm sure the container lid mentions the word collant and will have min/max levels indicated on the outside.

Just checked and it is upto the minimum line so I assume this is ok?

i had a similar problem with my 1.9 gp diesel, got my alternator and battery checked, both were fine. but looking on another thread on the forum which said to wait until all of the lights on the left hand side of your dashboard go out before you turn the key that final notch (all but 2 or 3 will go out as these stay on permanently), not straight after glow plug icon goes out. I tried this on mine and i havent had a problem so far, (im presuming you have a diesel)

What engine is in the car (petrol/ diesel) and engine size (if your not sure look on the sticker on teh drivers door frame near teh door catch

once we know the engine size we might be able to narrow it down

if its a 1.2 or 1.4 petrol my money is on the MAP sensor if the car starts then dies (usually the colder it is the harder it is to start)

I am experiencing the same problem. I have a 1.4 active sport petrol model, a 55 pre registered 06 model. When i turn the key, the engine comes on, then the revs drop and it dies. This can happen 3 or 4 times before it eventually starts and stays on. I had green flag out and the guy reckoned it was elecrical, possibly to do with the accelerator cable (apparantly it's electrical??) as when he tried to use the accel to help it start it made things worse. I took it to the garage but because i'd managed to start it that morning when they ran the diagnostic test no faults were found so am booking itinto the garage and taking it the night before so they can see what im talking about!

twinclaire

that sounds like the MAP sensor

they can be bought as a pattern part (not original) for about £25 on Ebay

i odered mine from this supplier (i have no connection with them i just searched for it at the time and they still list them)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAP-Manifold-...CarParts_SM&hash=item3ca3150a22#ht_6269wt_901

from their pic their phone number is 0261 230 030

or you can get one from

http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=3251&sku=7832

changing it takes an hour ( as you need to leave the battery off for an hour to reset the engine computer) but the swap over takes about 5 mins with the correct screw driver see here as long as you can get a T25 torx driver its one plug and one screw to remove

Went to start the car today and got check engine message. Also The injection system failure light, amber colour, is staying on. Any ideas whats wrong and if it will be expensive repair? Last loan payment paid on tuesday. Typical
