Well tonight whilst driving along the mway at a constant speed in 6th gear, my engine light came on, subsequently followed by a lack of revs and a nice knocking noise...

...I slowed down, flicked off the ignition and tried to reset everything (this happened in the Stilo JTD a few times and always worked - was the usual loss of boost issue...) but to no avail, ended up stationary on a very small hard shoulder.

Attempts to restart it failed, with my poor battery (1 mile journeys to work and back for a few months without a good long run) not being able to turn the engine over.

When the recovery truck turned up he plugged the old booster pack in, attempted to crank it, and it slowly turned over but make a horrid noise and wouldnt fire.

Suspect conrod failure.....

One new engine please..... (permission to say "Oh C0ck")

Maybe its just a belt thats slipped and damaged a few valves, but it could be a lot worse. Engine was not hot at time of failure, and no apparent loss of oil (although it was dark...). I'll check the oil level in the morning, but I always keep on top of my oil levels...

Any one know of a broken 1.9 Mjet with an engine going spare? (n)

Sorry to hear this - how many miles has the car done and was it serviced regular.
I have to say this is the first time i have heard this type of problem.

There is one on the bay but not cheap.

Yeh I saw that one, still cheaper than getting my £500 limit warranty to pay for it....

My motor has done 24,995 miles....

Tried to turn it over again today, without the noise of the motorway and some daylight, and it wouldnt crank at all, starter motor was clicking, then dash flashes on and off, and I have to turn the ignition off to reset the dash.

Will stick a camera down the plugs on Monday and see if its terminal, if not then I'll take it to Fiat for them to diagnose - could be something electrical...

How was the Servicing history? The 8 valve MJet is a long lived reliable old Hector of an engine built for high mileages when looked after.

So has it run a crankshaft bearing or what? My 56 plate re-mapped MJet had 74,000 on the clock when I P/X'd it and was still running mint. Anything we dont know about with yours Joss or just one of those things dya reckon?

this is unusual, I haven't heard of one of these engines letting go yet, most unlucky... I've just been away for a long weekend, covered over 1,000 miles, now up to 102,000 :)

I see your signature says 165bhp..had it rolling roaded again Sharky?

yup, been on a different set of rollers, just goes to show you can't believe rolling roads, to be honest I would only ever take figures given as an "estimate", and go more on how it drives! I went to RStuning in Leeds, they spescialise in the renaultsport models, I am in discussions with them about taking my car and doing the hybrid, as I have to be living on borrowed time with a turbo thats 100,000 miles + old! lol...

I'll post up on the work done if I go ahead.

Nothing untoward, did a few laps at a track day a few months back, but its ran fine since then, and even then didnt even push the engine, just the chassis and brakes.

Was running mint Friday morning!

Think its just one of those things.

How likely are Fiat to pay for it given the mileage etc?

I dont think they are a straight swop - different heads and the vauxhalls have a different injection system, but there may be some, i am sure someone will enlighten us.

Ffoxy, you do bang on a bit about how wonderful your car was. You were one of the lucky ones. I do not mean to dis you, however, you do have a habit of mentioning it quite a bit when someone poses a question about a problem with their particular car. You saying how great your car was does not really help! Sorry, just saying it like I see it. I am sure you wont like me saying this but it needed to be said.

Thing is Wellfan, it really WAS great, I'm just saying it (OK repeatedly) like I see it. Its not a habit, more a fact, but I can appreciate others have been less fortunate... a minority but non the less a vocal one. I'm simply providing balance on a Forum where most members or Posters are having grief...

But yea you're right I'll bugger off...(y)

Time I went anyway, new pastures & all that... Have to drag myself away... So long FF.

Considering the 1.9 JTD in the GP Sporting is the GM version of Fiat's engine, including Fiat's/Bosch's injection system, I can't see that being the case. Even had to service the boss' Astra the other day, and was greeted by the familiar JTD sight under the bonnet. ;)

Jos- what's the oil level like?

Only Sporting 'failure' I've had was a waterpump seizing which ripped through the cambelt and caused valve/piston contact. 8 new valves, guides, buckets and shims, waterpump, belt and tensioners and headgasket, and the car was sorted.

I know Mjet is 130hp and JTD is 115, but whats the difference?

Mjet is, in essence, a JTD (same head, block, internals), it's just subtle changes in turbo, intercooler and Map- though with the Mjet the ECU and injectors are also different due to the injection technology advances to improve emissions and reduce diesel knock.

There are (or were) JTD's with a wider power range than that- some with only 90bhp, 105bhp, 115bhp, and the GP 5dr Eleganza with 120bhp (exactly the same engine as Sporting), not to mention the 16v and 20v JTD's. ;)

Should do. Just depends if any critical items are damaged on yours or are what caused the initial failure.
