Technical 1.9 Mjet engine failure

New engine is finally fitted - took me two evenings after work and a saturday morning to finish off.

First time I turned the key it fired up, sounded a bit rough for a few seconds then settled down.

Then the auxiliary belt started to squeak, and the crank pulley got very hot quickly.

I'm not sure that the belt is correct - I think theres something not right with the tensioner. It seems to not be doing anything! The belt is running on the crank pulley twice. I've got a diagram from EPER, and according to that I've got everything in the right order. The tensioner has a locating lug on the bottom of it so it cant go anywhere else, it just seems to be working backwards, which I dont understand!

Can anyone take a picture of their belt - i've tried googling it to no avail - for reference please?

Otherwise its ready to go!

Cheers!

Yeh I managed to sort the belt thanks.

Somehow had the tensioner the wrong side of the whole lot. A non tired set of eyes fixed it!!

New problem. Idles ok, warms up nice and levels are good. But when I went to drive it out of the workshop, the power delivery wasn't smooth, very jolty.

I'm thinking shrapnel has damaged the turbo. However I've never experienced a poor turbo so I can't say for sure. Definately open to cheaper suggestions!!
It's not clutch related as it's the same when I'm stationary.

Cheers for any help!!

did you not inspect the turbo before fitting? im sure it would have some kind of damage, id get it put on a computer first.

They're the injectors from the new engine - I havent touched them. Also the fuel pump from the new engine.

Only 3 of the original injectors came out, the 4th one was welded in place!!

There's your problem.

The injectors are finely calibrated and set in 'classes' with individual codes which tell the ECU how much they'll flow at set opening times. Putting different injectors in without writing their numbers into the ECU will cause fuelling issues.

I mentioned injector codes in post #70. ;)

Thanks.

Last night I pulled the inlet pipe off the turbo as a precaution, and the turbo seems to spin freely - at that end anyway.

I disconnected the battery for 20mins to let it clear any codes and relearn etc, and now I have an engine light on. Which is positive! And it won't let me rev at all.

Friend is plugging in his snap on scanner at lunch to see, and failing that it's a trip to fiat.

At least the car knows there's a problem now!!

It needs a trip to fiat dealer fullstop or a private independant specialist with an Examiner HD. A cheapo fault reader ain't going to able to do what D4nny8oy just explained in post #89

FIATECUSCAN alongside an ELM327 1.4 or 1.4b device also has the required functionality to carry this out on the 1.9 JTDm however not currently on the GP section. The Bravo 1.9 JTDm 8v has the same ECU and is supported though a small notification warns you that this isnt 100% the ECU expected.

It's ok, it's booked into fiat tomorrow. It wasn't going to do any harm plugging in his 'cheap' £1000 scanner to see if something like a lamda sensor was faulty, to save the money of fiat doing it!

Will see what happens tomorrow.

Wow that program's getting very powerful VERY quickly! :slayer:

All sorted.

Matt @ Mill Lane Aldershot was very helpful.

Along with resetting the ecu and injectors, there was an EGR issue, which when blanked off it ran perfectly. The EGR fitted at the moment is from the new engine, so I'll swap back to my original EGR and hopefully all will be sorted.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice over the last few months!

Cheers guys

Thanks - to be fair it was fairly simple, just lots of bits!

Certainly not as quick was my 45 minute engine change on my F3 car last year at Magny Cours 1hour before a race!

Without the egr playing up, I think it would have been fine, but I'm kind of glad that its been to Fiat, just for reassurance.

Fingers crossed for MOT tomorrow!
