Hi All,

My GP has decided to start doing a quick squeak when starting, but only from cold, if it's been running I can't replicate it until it has cooled down. I've been to a garage and had the fan belt replaced which made no difference (although it was probably due a replacement anyway so not really a bad thing).

Performance, fuel consumption etc isn't affected at all, just this strange noise that only occurs on starting, not whilst running afterwards...

Any ideas?

Cheers,

B

Possible starter motor.

Also check the o/s scuttle panel drain tube and see if it's pouring onto the alternator.

but im more inclined to go with my first answer.

Cheers for the pointer - looked around elsewhere using starter motor as a focal point and a few have said a bit of grease in the gears can help - sound realistic? Or is it more likely to just need replacing?

I'd also imagine it's something I'd be best going back to the garage for?

Thanks,

B

If im honest i wouldnt have thought putting grease on there would work well, and if it did, how long would it last ? the starter is put under a lot of stress and more to the point its just not worth stripping it to grease..

Its not cost effective anymore to strip and rebuild these. not to mention if it is the starter thats noisey. the chatter you get on start up is probably worn teeth on the starter and there aint no amount of grease that will help...

This is just my two pence worth tho, and i have been known to be wrong before..

and yes ideally you would take it to a garage... so that we can keep technicians gainfully employed...

Cheers - another trip to the mechanic's on the way home from work today to see what his thoughts are!

I appreciate this is an old thread, but my 1.4 16v GP has just started doing this too.
A split second after starting from cold, I get a short sharp squeal from the left hand side of the engine bay (when sat in driving seat) It comes from the right hand side when leaning into the open bonnet.

Did you ever get this sorted?
and what was it in the end?

Cheers.

Things like this can be the guttering leading run off water onto the alternator / alternator belt

Water pump starting to go? Mine does the same so new cam belt and pump in the next 2 weeks

No such noise candidate on the left (right leaning to the bonnet) side of the engine, probably coming from a belt slipping …
Water in alternator is a very well known issue in UK (right hand driven but left hand designed cars, so they did not mirrored everything when mirroring the windshield wippers)
I'd have a look in this area …

If someone here helped You fix -or better, understand- your issue, hit the thanks icon @ bottom right corner, it's free and makes us feel helpy ;-)

check you have the modified scuttle drain, also do a water test and make sure the removable black plastic trim near wiper motor is water tight, mine was leaking onto the alternator until i re sealed it
