I have a 2007 Grande Punto (bottom of the range one) that's done 35000 miles. I've owned it from new and it's been serviced by the dealer every 10k miles.

Just recently I've started to hear a rattling noise at low revs. It seems to have got worse over the last couple of days.

  • When car is idling and I press the accelerator briefly the noise happens as the revs come to back down.
  • When I'm driving the noise is more constant and happens much more in low gears and under strain (uphill, roundabout etc). The noise stops if a jab my foot on the clutch to drop the revs right down.
  • With my head in the drivers footwell the noise seems to be coming from just inside the wheel arch.
  • From the wheel arch it seems to be coming from just inside the arch wall (like where the alternator is).
  • Looking down at the engine I can't hear the noise anywhere near as distinct as when I'm in the car so it's really hard to pinpoint.

I've read lots of other posts on here about similar noises but none of them end in a solution.

Anyone had this problem and actually solved it?

I have the same problem and I have only done 4000km. I was told this was a normal noise the car is meant to make but I doubt that very much. If anyone has a fix on this we would really appreciate it.

I have the exact same issue on my 51 plate Multipla. A low rev rattle that seems to be comming from the drive belt area of the car. Hot or cold it's always there at short intervals of 2-3 seconds. The drive belt is tight, The alternator seems to be the origin although I have no power issues. Someone else suggested a rattling flywheel. Just cant tell. All I know it is very loud and annoying.

I can turn the outside of the alternator by hand and the pulley makes a clicking noise per revolution, Could that at 1000 revs be the source of the loud rattle?

Possibly, along with several other of the lifers in here.

Pop ther bonnet, clock the black plastic pipe coming out the air box that drops down on the LH side?? Have a look at the bracket that supports it, more specificaly the rubber bush in the bracket that the pipe pips into.

Several large beers says its sh***d (y)

EDIT: Seeing as I am on a wind down I did a search and found it.

I have taken mine back to the local Fiat Service Garage here in SYDNEY AUSTRALIA and they have told me it is a normal noise for this car (other words we have no fuking idea). They took me out to the new Alfa Mito that apparently has the same engine as the Grande Punto (Sports Turbo here in Oz) and it made a similar sound. I wish there were other Aussies on this site that I could perhaps take the car to if they had the same and compare if their car makes the similar noise.

I have noticed the sound is quite loud when going down a hill and knocking the gear back from 3rd to 2nd.

Sledge has it spot on.

I checked the rubber grommet on the air intake pipe and it was worn through.

Taking the pipe off completely (just a couple of lugs on the air box end) confirmed that it was the source of the noise.

Fiat in the UK sell the rubber grommet along with the metal bracket that it site in for £8 (they don't sell them separately) so an easy and cheap fix.

I personally went for the cable-tie approach - even cheaper!

I'm now happy and rattle-free :)

Can you take a photo of what you done. I'm pretty sure I tried the same thing I even took the air intake lid off and it still made made the same noise. I wish this site could let u find drivers in the same country to compare the noise with.

Ok so I have uploaded a sound/mov file to youtube.

2009 Fiat Punto 1.4 Sports Turbo - the strange noise you can hear occurs as soon as I take my foot of the accelerator. This noise also happens when I begin to decent down a hill and change the gears from 3rd to 2nd and down to 1st if required. This sound test was done in 1st gear. What I was doing is driving along a quiet street accelerating to about 30km/h in 1st gear then releasing my foot from the accelerator. The noise you hear is as soon as I release my foot from the accelerator.

Any ideas?

Please someone help me work out what this is.

Right so clearly no on ehas a f**king idea what the noise is.

Again here is the link to youtube:

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any more detail.

Hard to tell from your video:

Some suggestions worth looking at:

Air intake pipe rubber gromit loose. See this linkhttps://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/205942-noise-under-bonnet.html

Turbo waste gate actutor.

Vibration from steering shaft where it connects to the knuckle joint in footwell.

Engine or gearbox mounts.

Sound proofing inside front wings vibrating.

As i said these are all suggestions as i can see you clutching at straws.

I had this until I put my induction kit on. Hearing it again though cos i have removed the ****ty induction kit.

Basically the noise is happening when I release my foot from the accelerator. That's all I can explain. Does it all the time.

What is the induction kit your referring to? Is your car making that exact noise when releasing your foot from the accelerator

I had a K+N filter that my mate give me from his MG ZR lol. It just wrattled at low revs and setting off. Mines a 1.4 16v Sporting.

Does that mean it happens when the car is not moving also?

Yeah, I could be sitting there at traffic lights revving the engine, and when i release the foot from accelerator, that noise you can hear in the footage is what happens. I recorded this holding my mobile phone down by the accelerator.
