Before everyone piles in and states all the effects that turbo chatter can make on your car I am aware that

a. It can ruin the turbo
b. It can put the car into limp mode
c. an engine warning light and message will appear

and all the other stuff, however unplugging the fuse situated on the bottom of the recirc valve makes it sound the muts nuts imo, just a shame it ruins your engine lol anyways enjoy

i like the sound of it, but if its going to cost money if just leave it standard:cool:

im no pro but didnt think it affected the engine, thought the chatter was just the excess air coming back through the wastegate?

The chatter is all the air hitting the recirc valve (obvs not leting the air through) then pushing its way back down and through the turbo as the fans spinning which, in the long run, will ruin the blades, I think another way of getting chatter is having a atmospheric dump valve with a really soft spring so the valve will just bounce making a flutter sound

Someone with a decent understanding for once. ;)

Chatter is caused when the throttle is snapped-shut after being on boost, the pressurised air backs-up through the pipes/intercooler/etc and gets "chopped-up" by the compressor blades creating the 'chatter' noise.

The issue is that it can cause abnormal loading on the turbine shaft and bearings as it surges and stalls leading to premature failure. Ball bearing turbo's are more susceptible to the damage, especially above 1 bar of boost, and turbo suppliers will usually not honour any warranty claims if a dump valve (atmosheric or recirc) is not used. However, aftermarket turbo companies will often refuse a claim anyway whether it's been maintained correctly or not.

I've not ran a dump valve on my own car for years (non-Fiat) and never had a problem despite it being a daily-driver and used on several trackdays. Neither have many others. :)

'Chatter' will usually occur even with a dump valve fitted, as on part-throttle/low boost the valve often won't open quickly enough to release the pressure, leading to a small amount of 'chatter'. It'll be even more likely to happen if the dump valve spring is made harder (making it slower/harder to open). The more boost you run, the louder and harsher the noise.

T-Jet's (and M-Jets) occasionally 'chatter' even when the recirc valve is working (and it's especially noticeable if the standard airbox is removed) though it's nothing to be concerned about.

I ran it like that for the past week and the car DIDN'T go into limp mode but an engine warning light did come on. I have since reconnected the fuse and the engine warning light has gone off.....

Hi mate sorry to be a pain but could you upload a picture showing which wire to disconnect?? Sure I know which one but I can't see a fuse as such

i get a load of chatter too when i let off, however i now get a sound like a siren when im on boost so time to look for a new turbo me thinks.

That fuse is located just behind the recirc valve it's a bit of a pain to unplug..... if you can't unplug it then whip the hose (that comes from the top of the recirc valve and links up onto the back of the engine cover) off and block it off it will have the same effect. AN ENGINE LIGHT WILL COME ON AND A MESSAGE SAYING CHECK ENGINE not to worry though its just the car saying why isn't my recirc working
hope the pics help
Good luck :)

Thanks mate I did wonder if that was the plug but I didn't want to unplug it incase it screwed my car up lol :)

Like I said it didn't put my car into limp mode however apparently it has happened to other people on here...... and also a word of advice dont run it with the chatter for months on end I'd advise to plug the fuse back in every now and again so you wont wreck your turbo

well theres the Garrett turbo thats off the Grande Abarth...... however, how much of a job would it be to use the Garrett off a Mini Cooper S??

Would it just be a case of getting the turbo with the manifold? I'm not that clued up on changing them lol

It's not a fuse though is it? It's the recirc valve solenoid itself that you're unplugging. ;)

Oh, and Mayatt has an Mjet (look at his sig), so not a Tjet related problem. A loud siren noise usually indicates debris has bent or damaged the compressor (intake) blades. Not a common issue with the Diesel sporting- are you running with the standard intake filter?

no got a GSR, been told its possibly 'the shaft assembly out of balance' by one turbo company, im looking at potential options on turbos, not alot of information about on here for mjets turbo changes from searching.

There's little Mjet turbo upgrades due to the exhaust (turbine) housing being part of the manifold and being a variable geometry design.

If you can remove the intake hose and view the compressor blades with a mirror, you'll soon see if the blades are damaged (a common fault with the 1.3 mjet). Or if you get to see the turbo once it's off, at least you'll know.
