For the past 4 months I have had the feeling I was being followed all over the place by the police.

Thankfully this was not the case (not that I have anything to hide). It was in fact my turbo whistling.

When the car was running from cold the sound was very loud but seemed to get slightly quieter as the engine got warmer.

As time has gone by, the sound has got worse so I decided to get it checked out by a local independent Fiat garage.

They quickly diagnosed that the turbo was on it’s way out. Now it has been well documented on this forum that if the turbo does let go a new engine could be the outcome.
According to the turbo technics website they say 75,000 miles is the average life of a turbo. Mine lasted 64000 and was still running ok but very noisy. I have also serviced the car more often than recommended using the correct Comma Syner D oil. Some might say that the re-map has affected the turbo but I would say I have run with that for 4 years now.

After a lot of research and a quote from the garage I decided to let them do the work.
I thought long and about getting a second hand one to try and save some money.

The best I could find is one on the “bay” for £300. This was from an 06 car with allegedly 20k on it. Fitting this would have cost approx £120 plus the cost of an oil, filter and coolant change another £60 plus the gaskets, union and seals required £35. All in cost would be around £515 plus also the risk that the turbo could be a dud with no real guarantee.

Whilst searching for a turbo I could not find a new replacement for less than £800 just for the part. Most of the main turbo firms did not even bother to respond to my emails which was disappointing.

The Fiat garage did all the above with a reconditioned turbo for £773 (25% discount on turbo) plus I had a loan car for the duration of the repair free of charge.

I now have the car back at all seems fine – just huge dent in my wallet and big smile back on my face. Here’s to another 4 years.

yeah Im having a very simular problem, Howling turbo etc. Has been a lot of talk on here about that problem but no one has done anything about it yet. But mine is only at 23,000 miles!

I found 24/7 parts had a few around the price of £300-£400 but as you said, could be a dud etc.

Does that car seem faster or any specific performance change or is the case that the turbo is fine and then it just dies or does it slowly wear down?

Also, how long did fiat take to do it ?

There was no noticable loss of power - just a lot of noise.
Some have stated that the turbo will shatter and send debris into the engine.
With this in mind i have changed mine just in case.

3 hours labour but that includes a mini service with that. It could probably be done in 2.

I haven't pushed the cars performance yet as i will gently run it in for a while, but seems ok so far.
If yours is only 23k is it not still in warranty - if not i would suggest you take out a warranty with click4warranty as they will cover a turbo and wear and tear. There are others like warranty direct but they are more expensive.
I will most likely take one out now to cover myself for future issues.

Yeah it should be, Spoke to them yesturday and just said take it in and get it diagnosed etc and get back to them. Shall let you know the price etc.

How come it's in warranty if it's an 06 plate?

Surprised to hear the expected distance to failure is only 75k miles, will be pissed if mine pops by then.

Must be ragging it.. My 1.3 turbo has done 97,000 miles with no issues.:)

I wondered how long it would be before someone questioned my driving style.
Most of my miles are motorway miles - i certainly do not rag it.
If you had a 1.9 you would know it generates good pace without pushing too hard. Also the 1.9 has a mutli vane turbo not the old school type the 1.3 has so who knows maybe there is a price for modern technology.

As for th 75k life span check their website. http://www.turbotechnics.com/turbo/faq.htm
