Hi, i recently bought some 17" alloys with 205/40/17 tyres. But im looking at bigger tyres so is a 225/40/17 possible to fit without rubbing and spacers?

Thanks John

Just why would you do that? 205's are overkill on a 1.2 never mind 225's. Completely pointless. You are unlikely to get anywhere near enough heat in them so they will most likely perform worse than your current tyres.

Why?

What’s the positive (& negative) outcomes? What was the problem with the `recent' 205/40R17? How long were they fitted? Who makes 225/40R17? ... what dealers hold that size? ... & £? What normally runs on 225/40R17 (in contrast to a GP 1.2/8v)?

Haven’t FIAT discontinued the GP 1.2/8v? … & why is that?

.

Fiat discontinued it becuase i have no idea, maybe sales werent up 2 it. But my car has been modified to allow bigger wheels, ive had 205/40/17 fitted for about 2months but wondered if 225/40/17 which i can buy from camskill tyres online, like on some golf's the wheels are bigger to make the car look lower and more chunky, thats all i wanted.

And i dnt understand where you all get this gearbox thing from, the rolling radius is the same, and unsprung weight is less than before, so i cant see where you all think it will go wrong.

It is well documented the issues with this.
If you search you will find examples.
here is one.

You have to remember it is just friendly advice form forum members. As long as you know the risks you can make an educated choice whether to fit them or not.

moving from 175-65-15 up to 205-40-17 is a -2.09% decrease in rolling circumference

175-65-15 to 225-45-17 is a 4.24% increase in the rolling circumference

and apparently 1.2 8v discontinued due to emission problems,

i would defo stick with 205-40-17 as these are not likely to effect the gearbox, as they are actually smaller in circumference than your old alloys.

I’ve no knowledge of show-pony mods – & I’m no engineer.

But the tyres alone I reckon will increase the weight by (say) +25% over spec. for a 1.2/8v – let’s say 10 kgs in place of 8 kgs (?) Let’s say you’ve tweaked-up the thrust, but you’ll need to - to cope with the extra weight & drag of big/wide tyres. Wider tyres don’t necessarily add to performance – e.g. you may just be adding bigger surf-boards. (You’ll need narrower winter tyres to cut through snow). If the tyres are designed for a heavier car, you’ll need to weld a chunkie RSJ over the CofG to add weight for the tyre pad to sit on the road correctly – or the centre blocks won’t touch the road.

The 1.2/8v lacked thrust in earlier Punto formats – but more seriously so in the GP.

I’m interested to know who makes 225/40R17 (Conti? Toyo?), & what dealer would hold them on the off-chance some punter would want them. If Camskill list them – have they actually got stock?

But I’m intrigued - put them on & let’s monitor the situation.

Let us have feedback on what you fit.
