Don't worry this isn't another thread about why it's happening etc etc.

I have a 59 plate Grande Punto with a tailgate that suffers from the seemingly common leakage from the stop buffers. The car is booked in next Monday to get it checked out and rectified - if the dealer can't fix the problem is it OK for me to:

1. Remove boot trim and wax the panels to stop the water from attacking the metal

or

2. Silicone seal round the seams (I've water tested and it seems like it's coming from that area)

or both??

Without affecting my corrosion warranty of course as I intend to keep the car for as long as possible.

I think i read on here somewhere that the cause of the leakyness is water getting in round the 3rd brake light?

I have had the same problem...after testing the entire tailgate I found that the cause of the leak was the seams of the boot (posted some pics bout a month or so ago) I sealed them and found that it stopped the leaking...but I was gonna try using insulating tape (to match car colour) that way if the warranty is an issue I can remove it ( I hope ha ha).....but then I only have until March / April before mine runs out.

If I were you I would point out the dodgy seams to your dealer....I am thinking of doing the same if mine ever leaks again!

Some of the seams on the tailgate don't even look like they're completely folded over, especially at the top where the hinges are.

I shall post up what the dealer says on Monday and see what they say.

It "seams" to me that the tailgate seams are the issue, but then I could be talking out of my rear exit hole.

Yeah it looks really shoddy....I asked my dealer to find the source and they said they couldn't find anything...more likely they never bothered looking as it was in for something else at the time.

Look forward to hearing what the outcome is....I personally reckon it should be a recall for the dealers to seal.....wonder if the new punto evo has the same flaw???

I have heard that it normally is the gromet of the windscreen wiper that lets water into the boot lid, as well as the 3rd brake light not being sealed properly

Dealer told me that the gromet was the cause of my leaking tailgate. Changed that and it still does it. Car is in 3rd year warranty so it cost me to get them to look at it as water ingress isn't covered.

I keep meaning to seal the tailgate as per Darths previous thread but with the nice weather recently have never got around to it.

Yeah I have heard all of this before too...but if you actually pour / spray water around these two areas (one at a time), leave it for a few minutes and then open the tailgate there is no evidence of water exiting the gromet (at foot of tailgate).......well there wasn't on mine.

It is a very tricky thing to try and rectify as the seam is very close to the edge of the tailgate....I have just covered mine with insulating tape but I think it will be a failure!! I am trying to take the easy way out from sealing the entire tailgate with mastic....cos its a nightmare job if you have no patience like me ha ha .

I am tempted to contact fiat direct :tempt:.......doubt if it will do me any favours.

Hi All,

New member to this site so hello guys!!

Reference your comments about the Grande Punto Tailgate Leak. Well i have had my 2010 Punto Evo GP for 2 months and after heavy rain the channel on the inter bottom edge of the boot, where the lock is, fills with water all along that seam, when i open the tailgate water pours out of the two grommets like a tap!!

So in answer to your statement, no, the problems is not solved on the Evo!!

Mine is going into my local dealer this week for 3 days to see if they can sort it out!!

Wish me luck

Mine has always done this for the past four and half years - cant say it has bothered me much as it channels the water away from you.
However i wonder how long before there are signs of rust/corrosion even though the panel is galvanised.

My Fiat service garage tried to fix mine on 1st year service
They used colour silicone to try and seal the welds with limited success
They also got some grommets from Fiat to screw into the 2 outer drain holes so the water can only exit from centre dain
I wasn't too happy so took the back inner panel off and sprayed inside bottom with waxoil
The ONLY rust on my aging mark 1 Punto is on the tailgate where the rear washer used to leak into it
