Hello there, i own a 57 reg 1.2 active grande punto, I have only done 16,000 miles in it, Today i was driving along and stopped at traffic lights, when i went to set off the gear box made a little banging noise and what i thought was knocked the car out of gear ! but it hadnt it was stook in second gear yet the gear stick is now very flexable and seems to be very lose, it will not however go into any gear at all, there is nothing wrong with the clutch as i can still drive in second gear, Setting off etc... it still stalls if i dont use the clutch...

what can this be, will my warrenty cover this? please tell me its not the gear box, should this be happening on 16,000 miles and can a car still drive and have a usuable cltch if the gearbox has gone?

Any help very much appreciated

At a guess it's still within the 3 year warranty which I believe should cover the gearbox as it's part of the drivetrain. It could just be a snapped cable but this is usually an indication of something more serious (clutch on it's way out for example). Take it to the dealer anyway, warranty should cover it.

Had exactly this experience in my Mk2B. Managed to keep rolling, until faced with a junction requiring a stop – then stuffed. Gear-selector cable – common fault apparently. £160 (July 2006).

oh...so will i not be covered if its the gear selector cable? mines stuck in second gear and i can still drive would this be still possible? thanks for your help by the way

It should all count as drive train, it's a pretty major component. 15+ yr old Cinq's cables are still intact so there's no reason it should have given way in such a short time/mileage. Speak to your dealer though, they'll know what's covered and what's not!

I’ve no knowledge re a warranty claim. I mention the cost as I log all motoring costs. The £160 may reflect whatever the garage had to do – can’t recall now if they collected the car from my place. It (Mk2B 1.2/8v) must have been stuck in third – as it wouldn’t have been snookered by a stop junction in second. On a positive note – it’s the only time a Punto has left me standing-in-the-road … & that’s over all Mk1, 2, 2B, & GP models.

My car has just done exactly the same problem as yours mr plumber rochdale. Reversed off a kerb and then went into first and now can only drive in 1st gear, with lever being very loose and unable to move from 1st or 2nd gear.
