Check gearbox oil level... may be too late. Sounds to me like the gearbox is worn . Odd... 65,000 miles on mine now, re-mapped too... no hint of a noise.

Update:
Been looked at by Nationwide Garage and they have said it is the gearbox. They are removing the box tomorrow to send up to Gloucester Gearboxes who will dismantle and diagnose. When Diagnosis is complete Nationwide garage will contact warranty company to see if claim is valid. I Spoke to warranty company and as i am covered for wear and tear as well as mechanical failure the guy seems pretty certain claim would be approved. Sounds like a new gearbox is on the cards but I will keep you posted.

I will also add that i don't rag the hell out of the car and most of the mileage has been on the motorway. If i do put my foot down usually already rolling so in 2nd or 3rd rather than always red lining 1st!

It's most likely the bearing in the front of the gearbox gone. This was a very common problem on the mk2 puntos so they probably have'nt sorted it still! Pretty easy fix once the box is out.

just a quick one can anyone help me i have a mk2 punto speedgear when im driving along and get to about 3000rpm the car revs out can i fix myself or would it be a garage job and how much would it cost for parts :slayer:(y)

Latest!
Gearbox bearings where shot! Apperrantley a few more hundred miles and the thing would have exploded!!!

Looks like will be covered by my extended warranty:D

As i have said before i have never really ragged the car so am a little concerned that this has happened.

Car should be back to me on friday next week.

The front bearing fails with monotonous regularity. If it's left eventually the oil seeps out and all the bearings go. It's not a problem confined to puntos, any vehicle that uses the gearbox which started life in peugot 205s (106,306,saxo, rover 214,metro,25 and early BMW minis) also have the same problem.

Good info. Cheers

I went through 2 gearboxes on my 2005 Punto Sporting 1.4 16v with the above happening on both! After the second time I got pi**ed off and managed to get hold of a 2006/2007 Grande Punto Sporting box which has worked spot on since (currently 60k miles and counting!).

Collected car on Friday and seems to be fine now. Down thourgh extended warranty with click4warranty. Had to pay £115 which is the first 10% of claim. Next thing is to get quotes for 72k service with cambelt change!

mmm I had 2 saxo's and a C2GT and the gearbox bearings failed every 40k on all three cars I knew by the milage when the next noise was due!

however, up to 96,000 in the fiat now, and apart from being slightly notchy, the gearbox works "as new" with no noise at all (y)

*keeps fingers crossed.....

I have been looking at extended warrenties that include wear and tear (as I expect gearbox/turbo probs ect after 100k) but in the last 2 years i have speant about £200 on repairs (£100 per/year) and the sort of warrenty that covers wear and tear is about £450 per year!... ssooooooo out of interest, does anyone happen to know how much it would cost for fitting a new bearing set to the box? if the OP paid the first 10% £115 + the yearly warrenty cost, would a recon be able to be done for £500 ish quid? (I paid £500 for the last saxo box + new clutch....)

Click 4 warranty was £250 for a years 5 star cover including wear and tear. the only problem is their reccomended garage is Nationwide Autocentres and in my experience they are a bi heavy handed, found a snapped bracket in the engine bay and electrics routed where water pipe should be clipped!

Had cambelt and 72k service done the other day and the following problems have been highlighted:-
Rear drivers side Wheel Bearing needs replacing
Leaking oil near Turbo
Rear calipers need replacing as one is leaking and the other is causing pads to rub
Rubber boots covering handrake cables have perished,

I am trading in my car to get a VW GT TDI Golf. I don't think the Punto is designed to cover 25,000 miles per year i do which is mainly motorway driving. Getting £4k trade in for my 56plate 1.9d Sporting with 72k on with leather int, climate control.
