Is this a butterfly valve on the diesel engine?

If so would running a BOV work?
 
Im planning on getting a remap some time and i thought that they increased the boost so a BOV might be of benefit. Im not interested in the sound more towards gains.

I thought that they didnt do diesels with butterfly valves anymore. They just inject more fuel into the cylinders then because it acts like a pump it draws its own air and increases in rpm that way...
 
It is of no benefit on cars running such small turbos. Its worth it on high powered turbo cars such as Evo's and Impreza's.

Ah ok. Its just that when i change gear, i have to wait for the turbo to spool again and it is rather anoying. I was hoping a BOV would help this but obviously not :eek:

My turbo isnt that small... couldnt find it the first time i looked, i was used to my brothers R5 Turbo which is massive compared to it lol

The butterfly you see there and on the 1.9 JTD is the stop valve.

As you turn off the engine this closes mometarily to prevent further combustion. This will also prevent dieseling (if thats the right word on a diesel) where if oil was entering the air intake in sufficient quantites would cause your engine to run on even after the igniton is cut.

I'm not sure when else this will close though, however some of the Alfa JTDm owners remove this as it restricts airflow.

That's interesting, I think that's what happened to mine when it got wet!

It kept running even with the key out and in my hand.
 
It also partially closes to increase EGR efficiency under certain conditions. Most of the time (and at full throttle) it's wide open.
 
Aaaah, so as the EGR is post butterfly then the engine's own vaccum (though minimal on a Diesel) pulls air (smut) from the EGR rather than the intake?

"Minimal" usually on a diesel, but when the inlet is 'choked' with the throttle butterfly, the vacuum is massively increased. ;)
