Hi all,

I own a 57 (nov 07) GP sporting MJ1.9. Its in its 3rd year now and everything is falling apart. Here is a list...

-Alloy wheel corrosion on all 4 alloys
-Dash lights on heater pannel not working (not bulbs)
-Vent under windscreen lifted up when hot air on
-Whirring noise from rear right wheel (louder the faster i go). Possibly bearing?
-Passenger seat will only lock in one position

So my car went in this morning for the steering recall, the dealer said NONE of these issues are covered by the third year warranty?!!!??! I cant beleive that a 2.5 year old car has this many problems. I know they wont do the wheels as i have already been in contact with fiat HQ on this. My fiat is on auto trader tomorrow if these dont get fixed for free.

Does anyone have any advice on how i can get my dealer to fix these problems under the warranty? I am expecting a call today when they have looked at all the problems.

If they are the only problems you have had to date.......you have not done bad (y)

no not yet. I think i will be putting the damn thing on auto trader tomorrow. Time to buy a civic

Wow thats a bit rash. Most of those faults you can fix yourself with help from this forum. Another dealer will say the same, they are tied to the warranty provided by the third year. There is not a lot covered by the third year, I had a coolant pipe fail, a boost pipe fail, B&M failed and my steering wheel has bubbles in the leather, none of which covered by the third year. If you look on Civic forums, theres pleanty more problems with some of them compared to you'res.

yeah but if its a civic type R, you may be a little less frustrated to repai it if you get a problem ;)

I have had a go at fixing them. I changed the dash bulb, but its a lose connection somewhere. The alloys will cost about 100 each to get done and the dash i cant get back down at all. God knows what is wrong with the rear wheel. Dealer will no doubt say its in my head. Im getting rid before the wheels rot so bad no one wants to buy it. My corsa lasted 5 years with not one fault. Time to leave fiat for sunnier shores

Nah it won't. I had mine done by a reputable company in Kent through a tyre dealer near where I live - they cost about £60 a corner if I remember correctly. And I was really, really pleased with the result! It wasn't a bodge job either.

I'm gonna be a little harsh here Tommy...

Off you go... buy a Civic....

Now then, my alloys were all powderc oated for £45 a corner, done by The Wheel Specialists in B'ham... excellent job. Loose connection... just find it... all cars have them believe it or not!

Get the rear wheel bearing done its not that expensive, mine WAS done under 3rd yr warranty.

Alternatively go buy a Civic...

:nono: Mr Ffoxy. Play nice - we want him to buy a BMW as they never go wrong

I'm a little dim with these things, but is a powder coating what's on the original wheels? Mine were just "restored" to the 'factory look', which I assumed was taking back to the alloy. sand blasting, filling and coating in lacquer again.

It's a shame that time, a few broken curbs, and once or twice bad parking by me (don't tell anyone) have taken their toll and I need the edges repairing again :(

Powder coating is all together different to the original finish Garree, thicker, more durable are 2 advantages. Its key to avoid kerbing as no finish will resist that. Mine still look almost as good as the day they were done, with tyre fitters causing the few tiny blemishes they now have.

Thanks for the info - for some reason, it won't put in a thanks when I click it. Just vanishes when I do.

Hi all,

-Alloy wheel corrosion on all 4 alloys
-Dash lights on heater pannel not working (not bulbs)
-Vent under windscreen lifted up when hot air on
-Whirring noise from rear right wheel (louder the faster i go). Possibly bearing?
-Passenger seat will only lock in one position

Alloy wheel corrosion on all 4 alloys
The GP alloys never stood up to corrosion that well and we have had a lot of salt put on the road this winter - I think around £45 to £50 per wheel is the norm or you could do it your self using some cutting paste and a tin of laquer spray and lots of elbow grease.
-Dash lights on heater pannel not working (not bulbs)
Not so easy this one unless you are good with electrics - but i would expect a good autolec to fix for an hours labour.
-Vent under windscreen lifted up when hot air on
A bit of superglue works wonders. not too much though.
-Whirring noise from rear right wheel (louder the faster i go). Possibly bearing?
Could be the wheel bearing £70 or a defective tyre (i had one of these and it drove me mad)
-Passenger seat will only lock in one position

Remove seat (4 star bolts) check all the cables etc. anyway who sits in the passenger side of a GP - lol

If these are not covered by the warranty then the dealer is not going fix them.
I would think electrics and wheel bearing would be covered though as long as you state they are broken and not worn.

go and complain to your local council about your corroding alloys, i've worked for many makes of car and if you think corroding alloys are unique to Fiat then think again.

As for the dash trim you know it needs a new one so tryimng to re-fastening it when the clips have obviously broke is just wasting your time.

wheel bearing is covered by 3rd year warranty bar any obvious exceptions.

dash lights need 2 bulbs and tightening of bulb holder terminals

Please let the forum know if you advertise in autotrader as quite sure someone is looking for a decent car.

so...

some good news, some bad.

Recall complete, dealer will not fix alloys, dash buld or vent trim. Im paying 25 quid for the trim and will fix the dash lights myself

However the whirring noise was the bearing and the warranty will pay. Also they have ordered a new seat mount to fix the seat which is also covered.

I have however just put a deposit down on a Civic 2.2ctdi EX. Picking it up next sat. Fiat will be on auto trader in about an hour.

Edit....

apparently the seat mount was broken, a piece had snapped off. Car should be good as new next week. Thank you for all of the helpful replies, on this thread and over the years....
