how did you manage that

do you want it permanatly live or switched? what are you planning to run off it?

well...

i bought some thing very similar to this...

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97951

only it also had a usb connector too.

plugged into the original cigar lighter it worked fine.

So...

i cut the wire and tapped it into the wires behind the original cigar lighter (red and black) so i could hide it and run it to the glovebox so i could have enough power to run my hard drive into my b&m.

but when i plugged my hard drive in the usb wire smoked like hell and i just ripped it all out.

feel a bit of a tit now, but i can't se what actually changed in wiring it from behind the cigar lighter!?

got it sorted, just swapped the wires over and its fine, however...

i seem to have lost power to my b&m and the second usb port in the glovebox, cjecked all the fuses in the glovebox and they are all fine!!?!?

is the fuse that covers these in the engine bay? or could it be something else?

Digging up a bit of an old post but I'm looking to do something similar - without the frying of electronics!

I'm puzzled over how to remove the glove box so that I can put a hole in it to sink the 12v connector so it sits flush inside.

The eLearn 'manual' says 'remove the plastic pin' but this is describing a left hand drive vehicle. I've had a look and a prod around but I don't particularly want to be pulling bits of plastic only for them to break perminantly, knowing how vulnerable the glove box is.

Does anyone know how to take it out?

cheers, you were partly correct.

its actually bottom left, just needs a screwdriver sliding behind it and prising out towards the right.

now I've got that done I have another question. The original cigarette socket has 3 wires going into it, black, red/white and yellow/black. Any idea which I should be wiring up to the two (positive and negative) terminals on the new socket??

I'm guessing it should be red/white for positive and black for negative, then yellow is the ignition switch... but I guess that then would mean the secondary socket that I'm adding will be permanently on?

Is yellow not the positive feed for the little bulb in the orange surround?

I wired a couple of seperate 12v sockets into the car and, as you said, red/white is positive and black is negative - and they turn off without the ignition on.

That does make more sense, and explain the wiring diagram too. I don't actually have a light on mine, which is probably why I am confused and thinking its something else

cheers!

Thanks for that but I had already done the arm-up-the-centre-console-blindly-feeling-around-for-a-loose-wire thing

And I can confirm that the new one is indeed switched with the ignition.

Hey! I'm planning to do this same thing... I want (need) a power outlet in the glove compartment. So did you located the cigarette lighter cables inside the center console (behind ventilation system controls or something like that) or did you wired it from the cigarette lighter itself and all the way up to the glove compartment?

Thanks!
