Twice today i have started the car from Cold and i have had it stall the first time or two...

2006 1.2 8V Grande Active No air con 23K ish miles

if i give it a few revs or blip the throttle its fine once started and running i dont have a problem with it stalling

Not had a problem at all since it was new and it worked fine through the recent really cold weather..

what could it be?

thinking coolant temp sensor,

throttle body

damp

I had this on both my alfa's. Each time it was battery related. The first was as a result of fitting too low powered a battery, the 2nd was also too low powered a battery that started doing this when it got older.

In short, replace the battery.

Mayo is normal on all italian cars in this weather. Just the moist air and it accumulates under the filler cap. Go for a long drive and it should clear.

will slap it on my charger tonight and see if it helps tomorrow morning (it has battery recovery pulse charge) But i have had No PAS issues which seems to crop up if the battery is on its way out or flashing mileage

Not so worried about the Mayo just that reading the stilo guides it can cause erratic tick over that's all cant harm cleaning it out :)

just to confirm this is the MAF sensor?

Also just found another earth point which comes off the same loom bunch near the starter motor so gave that a clean up whilst i was at it (can't do any harm)

yes Andy.

How long/attempts does it actually take for the car to start?

usually 3 or 4 when been stood several hours starts then revs just fall away till it stalls by the 3rd/4th attempt i have my foot on the accelerator to bring the revs up then its fine never had a problem until yesterday.. started fine this morning but then threw a fit tonight at work

have tried this tonight thought it was worth a shot

take it if all else fails i can unplug it as a get me home option and the car will run fine from cold (was warm when i did it tonight)

EML Light Reset.... (MAP issues)

as per my earlier post i have fitted a new MAP sensor (its a pattern part but looks identical to the OEM Bosch one right down to the casting and marks on the casing without the sticker probably a fatal mistake but we'll see) the MPG has come back up big style and the car starts way better....

i cant get the EML to turn off regardless of which sensor i plug in (the OEM one didn't trigger the EML till i run it unplugged to prove a point)......

Will it self clear after several good runs providing the new sensor is ok?

I have an OBD reader and after running it unplugged i get 2 P code faults one barometric pressure and inlet temp sensor fault as "PENDING" and another for the barometric pressure showing as "STORED"

i reset the ECU and plug the map back in then start the car EML light stays on and the "stored" fault (barometric pressure) comes back

I have just taken the battery off for an hour to see if that does any good?

Any help would be gratefully received :)

had this problem on grande 1.4 8v 56 reg 27k miles, cured by correcting weak battery connections, fix tight with small 4mm self tapping screw into terminals (the spring loaded standard battery connectors go loose with cold mornings/ age !-) This fix also cured bad/ify starter relay, bad gearchanges from the autologic gear box when in auto mode.
miss's wanted to get rid of car, but since fix loves it once again

Andy

I had poor starting problems in my 1.4 8v GP (56 plate 36K miles, just serviced). Similar to your problems, I took your advice and swapped the MAF sensor and the problem has gone away.

Today the car started perfect as normal but on the way to work the car now fully warm stalled 3 times during the journey. Do you think the battery is getting low on charge? I have checked the terminals and they seem very secure.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

When I get home I plan to disconnect the battery and put it on charge for the rest of the day anyway.

that is ironic guess what mine was doing today :bang: i have litterally JUST walked in the house having put a new battery on it, mine did throw the Engine management light on but went off when i restarted if it happens again i will stick my code reader on and see what it shows (y)

Do you think it is battery related then (both yours and mine)?

well it has two chances.... know my battery has been on its last legs for a while and a load test confirmed it...... you been suffering from flashing mileage readings, strange warning messages, or power steering cutting out?

i paid £35 incl the dreaded for a equiv battery with a lifetime warranty (for what thats worth) from the local factors

many fast fit places do a "free" battery test so might be worth taking a couple up on their offer but shop about once you are sure the battery is weak as lets face it you can save a fair bit of money if you do shop about :)

there is a guide in the guides now on how to swap

https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto-guides/257103-grande-punto-battery-replacement.html

but first check the earths are all clean

https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto-guides/169204-grande-punto-engine-bay-earthing-points.html

and the battery clamps are tight if you have a multimeter test the resistance in the earth cable from the battery its not unknown for these to fail and set up a high resistance path

if mine goes again first thing i will be doing is hooking up to my lap top to see whats going on (y)

Thank you for the reply. I am getting the excess radiator temp message and flashing mileage occasionally but never any issue with power steering. I gave my battery a 5 hour charge yesterday and cleaned the battery terminals and made sure they were all clean and tight. I dont have a multimeter so did the clean up anyway. Drove it today on the same journey and it was fine today. I shall keep an eye on it, if after a few days/weeks it starts to play up again I will get the battery tested and replaced if required.

Fingers crossed thats it.

Cheers.
