My 1.2 Grande needs 5w40 motor oil. I can get a 2 LTR pack from Halfrauds for £15 (their own make) or 4 LTRs of Castol or Mobil 0w40 for about £20.

I've read a few Wikipedia articles and understand that the first number is the cold start viscosity and the second number is the normal (driving) viscosity.

Can I use 0w40 or will it damage the engine?

the 1st number is the thickness and the second is the heat it performs at. i wouldnt use 0w40, far to thin, get the proper oil and dont go halfords, get urself to a decent independant motor factors.

Mmmmm, another what oil. As said stick to what the manufacturers state. As for hellfrauds, prior to what some think, their oil is good stuff, don't quote me but I think its made by Esso, well I think they used to be. If you get the numbers correct you will be quite safe.:)

The wee punto I had, I used hellfruads 10/40 semi for years. I did change every 5000mls though. Engine was sweet as a nut when I sold it, in fact the chap that bought it did more of a thorough inspection [engineer:rolleyes:] & he said for an old car the engine was tip top. He purchased it for his daughter, but that's another story.........

In GP manual it says only use 5W-40 oil...
They recommend Selenia K , but this is not a good choice.
I personally go with my oil at service (the car has warranty , otherwise I would changed the oil myself) and I use Mobil Super 3000 5W-40 , and i`m verry happy with it..
I must say that a noise dissapeared...First time in the morning when I started the car a short noise (1-2 sec ) like tzac tzac tzac was coming from the engine , since I got mobil , no more noise , engine is more silent :)
