Was doing a bit of preventative maintenance on the GP today, cleaned all the s***e sticky spray grease off the terminals and posts, reconnected and covered liberally with copper grease:D

Question is the battery doesn't look like a sealed for life battery, I unscrewed one of the cell caps and it had a dipstick type affair with a green ball on the end.

I'm assuming green means it's wet, should I be checking the other cells regularly or not:confused:

Battery is the original VARTA.

the green ball is a bit of a joke its a very crude hydrometer measuring the spacific gravity of the elecrolite in that one cell green its charged black its flat......

pop the caps off check the plates are all covered with electrolite (acid solution) if not top them up (WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING) with deionised water (from local motorfactors) then leave the car to idol for a few mins...

(starting the car stops the small chance that the car wont start after topping up due to diluting the charged electrolyte)

when the battery charges hydrogen is released so no smoking when around a charging battery

(usual cautions applies. eye protection and gloves to protect from acid splashes)

Top em right up or just enough to cover the plates.

Can't believe I bought a new car with a non sealed for life battery....:rolleyes:

Fiat can't win. If they fit a sealed for life battery, people whinge they can't top it up. Fit a battery which can be maintained if necessary, people whinge they might have to top it up.

:cry::cry::cry:

I'm not complaining, lol, I check everything else weekly anyway, hardly going to inconvience me any more.

I just thought most newish car had sealed for life batteries.

I'm going for AGM when this eventually goes anyway:D
