I've just noticed my turbo has developed a different sound after boost, I think it's compressor surge.. I am worried my turbo might be about to fail (I don't know anything about turbos), can anyone reassure me I'm being paranoid or tell me what's the worse I should expect?

If anyone wants to hear the sound it makes, it's like this; *Pshhhhhhhhhh(spooling like normal)* *Shewww(recirc bov like normal)* *Shuhshuhshuhshuhshuh*

Sounds quite cool but again.. Worried about this.

Anyone with info please help!

Cheers, O.B

P.S. I tried the search function but couldn't find anything.

If the sound changed without remaping, then I would visit the dealer to give it a check...

Yes I just noticed it a few days ago, I haven't remapped it or done ANYTHING to it :bang:

Thanks for both of your replies I'll have to take her in when I get a chance .. bloody typical it's just me thats it's happened to..

Sounds like the electronically-controlled recirc valve may be sticking closed and causing the boosted air to 'back-up' through the compressor blades creating the 'chatter'. It's not unusual to hear it occasionally under certain conditions- but it shouldn't be all the time.

Take it to your dealer for a check-over.

It's not happening all the time, only after I get a big bit of boost - forgot to mention this, sorry. To be honest it's only done it a few times but it suddenly starting doing it is what worried me..
That definitely sounds like what's happening I'll be sure to take it in. (y)

Cheers!

Kind of makes sense if it happens with big boost but not small boost if the vacuum is holding the valve closed then it's sticking.. We'll have to see.

As for the change in noise you would think either a valve or seal is not doing its job. With regards to the chatter, one of our tractors had a problem like this last year, it turned out to be a loose blade.

I'd take it to the dealer, better to be safe than sorry.

As said before best bet get the dealer to look at it, but most likely be a leak from somewhere, have you noticed any smoke from the exhaust??, generally if the turbos on the way out u'll see a big cloud of smoke from the back under accelleration, usually white smoke, burnt oil=fried rings etc oil in chamber bad news :(

but get the dealer to check it out:)

Haven't noticed any smoke at all, just gave it a spirited drive home from work and guess what.. yep the sound has gone completely, like every time something goes wrong with my stuff and make a fuss :D

What was annoying me about it is I have been obsessive about looking after the turbo, letting it cool down even after short trips, waiting for oil temp before brisk acceleration etc..

Ta for the replies.. I don't get why it's not doing it anymore, is there a group of priests on this forum that I'm unaware of

I really, REALLY have grown attached to the sound..:shakehead: I tried it again and it only makes the chatter at full boost (It didn't magically stop as I thought )
It sounds so nice ..
If I take extra extra EXTRA care do you think I can kee.... what am I saying I can't keep it! (n) I've heard stories about how compressor surge is evil and how the turbo will die if you keep it shushushushin'
It's too nice a sound to be good for the car LOL

Who to believe?!

Have you still got the Ford still? When you say you removed the atmos. bov do you mean you actually took it off then blocked the boost off??

Is it a tdi or a petrol??

Yeah, still got it. It's an XR3i with a Fiesta RS lump. They left the factory without any form of dump-valve, but being my first 'turbo' car I had to have one.

Took it off after a few months as I got bored of the "tssstt" gayness.

Depending on how quickly the recirc valve opens you will likely get a small amount of 'chatter' until the air is redirected (even with a dump-valve I could get a little 'chatter' under certain loads/boost levels). The more boost you run, the better the 'chatter' sounds.

You're a bad influence on me, Danny Boy. A baaaad influence
