250 for a second service??

Hi guys, I posted earlier about having my first service done....

When I called Fiat up they said since my cars 2 years old it should be doing its second service, which they quoted at 250...

Basically I was waiting for my car to hit the 18000 mile mark which it says in the handbook to be its first service time...but what I didnt notice was that its due at 18000 miles or 12 months which ever comes first..

So I just wanted to know is 250 too high for the service? Should I go to kwik fit because they only charge 140? Whats your opinions?

Thanks in advance!

You get what you pay for!

2nd service involves:

Oil + filter
Plugs
Air cleaner
Pollen filter (if fitted)
Brake Fluid etc

When you think about it its 2 years old and you haven't had a service yet so at 250 you can look at it as 125 a year!

You don't say what model your car is, petrol or diesel engine?

If it's a diesel engine then the price quoted is about right, if it's petrol shop around and ring other dealers.

Personally i wouldn't take my car anywhere near kwik fit, but that's just me, i'm a bit choosy as to where i take my car.

For the differencee in cost i think it's worth peace of mind.

I took my car for it's second year service to the dealers, and whilst it was there they did some warranty work for me, including replacing the EGR valve, so for me it was well worth it. I paid about 250, which was the cheapest of all dealers in my area, and the best of the dealers too in my opinion.

If you search (you may have to use google) GP Servicing costs now stop moaning.

There is a thread about servicing costs for the GP, discussed to some length too

That's a very good way of describing it Chris

Did you manage to find the plugs on the diesels lol

Re: 250 for a second service??

Hey guys, sorry its a 1.4 t jet... forgot to mention it lol.

I might just pay the 250. I bought the car 2nd hand in april last year and made the dealer do a basic service which was just doing all the normal checks and change the engine oil. No spark plugs or any other parts were changed..

My friend who works for a fiat dealer sells genuine fiat service kits which includes an oil filter, air filter, polen filter and 4 spark plugs all for 70. So when a dealer says 250 for the service I just wonder what im paying for.

I think im just being a bit picky, I'll just pay the 250 (that was actually the discounted price, they wanted closer to 300 before).

One more thing, he said I might need my brake fluid changing which he claims costs 70 but he'll charge 45 after a discount. Arnold Clarks service centre charges 29 for it so I think I am getting ripped off by Lookers Fiat.

Re: 250 for a second service??

All the serviceable items comes to more than 100 when i look at my invoice for last service. Spark plugs need doing on every service on a Tjet aswell. If the dealer serviced it when you bought it they probably reset the service counter. Did they mark the book saying it had been serviced aswell?

Yea they stamped my book and also gave me the service checklist thing.... The parts retail at 110 i.e. the spark plugs and filters etc, but I can get them straight from Fiat for a discounted price of 70. The guy at lookers fiat said because i've done low mileage (15000) after two years he said Fiat recommend I get the 18000 mile service which he says costs 280 but 250 after discount.

If you think its worth it i'll take your word for it because to be honest you are experienced and I dont know much about this kind of stuff.

Re: 250 for a second service??

Yeah they are right. If you have had 1 low mileage service and then not done many miles between that and your next service you still need to get the full mileage service. If you did go to somewhere like sh*t fit then they wont be able to reset the service counter in the car either so you would then have to go back to Fiat and see how much they wanted to do that....

Personally i would just go to Fiat for it as then if anything does go wrong you can say you serviced it so its down to you where as you go to somewhere like sh*t fit, something goes wrong you take it to Fiat and they go not our fault they probably didnt service it correctly.

Yes and No Mat!

It's all about finding the right dealer, as i have done, but there are some dealers that don't provide a very good service, as i have experienced.

It took one dealer probably a full day to find my wheels bearing fault, so once the job had been done i never dealt with them again.

I now use another Fiat dealers, which is actually closer than the one mentioned above, and they provide a very good service imo

Price sounds OK to me

Service prices are a complete lottery, My wifes 500 first service A.C. Edinburgh 155. A.C. Dunfermline 90. Maybe you can explain the pricing policy used by them.

Cheers Ian

Re: 250 for a second service??

I can't really comment on other dealers.

We use a Fiat Menu Pricing system set at our hourly labour rate agreed between us and Fiat. This then uses 'your' vehicle details to price the required parts/oils/labour for that service.
