thers some wa###rs on this site

There certainly are. They pop up now and again, in fact all too frequently, and harass posters, particularly new posters, with smug arrogant retorts. They know who they are. Identifiable by their hairy hand palms. Smug bar stewards.

I'm ignorant on the matter of "standing starts".

I'd be under the impression that if you have your revs up and bring the cluch into play carefully resulting in smooth launch (no wheel spin, or sudden bad jolt forwards) that the only major issues you should get will be worn clutch.

Someone fill me in, but that makes sense to me.

I had my GP well over a year, did many a standing start and never had any gearbox issues.

well, no expert, but I've done it a couple of times myself but obviously dropping the clutch isn't a good thing anyway, coz you're gonna spin the wheels, unless you've got ESP in your car to stop that happening? but slamming the gears from 2nd to 3rd hard would be the main problem I think!

Foxy would be best to ask as he seems to know alot about these things!:worship:

It would be traction control that stops the wheels spinning on launch.

But if T/C is counteracting you trying to accelerate, that can surely only be destructive.

What I'm saying is, if you launch your car correctly (lots of "fast" cars come with launch control these days) then I cant seeing it destroying your gearbox. Unless someone can advise me otherwise of course.

Maybe its to do with thrashing at your gears between gear change then?

anyway "fast cars usually have flappy paddle gear boxs these days so maybe thats the reason they dont go wrong as much these days along with the launch control? but just sumising really!

as for the T/C I don't think the OP's GP trim has this so doesnt really come into the argument!

If the car he had was a 1.4 8v, then you could look at it as a heavy car's gearbox struggling to cope with the severe pressures of hard acceleration due to slow engine/heavy car combined?

If someone could clarify this that would be pretty cool!

In your opinion?;) .....so who rattled your cage?
Just feel new posters get a really rough ride. Most of them talk total p..h. But they need to be given a bit of slack. Who the feck joined the site to give advice? Most join to get advice, and then stick with the site.

fair point, but you've got to admit, calling folk such as the dealers w@nkers like the OP did was a little uncalled for, and kind of rubbed some folk up the wrong way!;)

Launch control destroys boxes. Any car that has it has a restriction on how often it can be used as you use it too many times in a row and bang there goes your box.

You've got it in one. Do it smooth and your clutch sufferers excess wear but prevent transfering all the jolt and shock through the gearbox, diff and other driveline components.

All cars I have driven in the past 20 years were company cars doing 100,000 miles + and I never had a clutch fitted to any of them, likewise the cars I have personally owned in more recent years, treated with empathy they will last (cue ChrisUK insult...) :p

Nah :). I drive mine hard but with empathy, Servicing gets done more than factory schedule and on time etc etc.

I'd drive like you if I had your milage to do :p.

Hopefully the GP doesn't have the same problem as the mk2 and mk2b with clutches. Problem with the pressure forks getting unevenly worn and "sticky" and eventually failing with the clutch pedal getting stuck to the floor.

(y) so far so good Chris, its on 56,600 miles now and all is still well with the DMF and operation action on it. In fact... No complaints at all! :D
