when i start the car the usual glow plug light flashes up i wait for it to go out and turn the ignition over and she starts the very first time... then i get the warning "check glow plugs" and the little glow plug light flashes at for a little while 5 or so times, then the message clears its self. Car runs perfectly fine too...

Any ideas? as im abit of a noivce were are the glow plugs so i can check them.. assume its just a loose connection? might have knocked them when i cleaned my egr valve out today? if there located around the same area.

an going to disconnected the battery in the morning to try and reset the ecu see if this clears it? but if anyone can point me in the direction as to what im looking at for the glowplugs that would be greatly appreciated so i can check all connections?

i got exactly the same problem when i forst did my egr, theres a fuse box directly behind the egr, and i accidentally caught it with my ring, and it sparked! and it blew three glow plugs, take it to fiat, they can confirm

oh and the glow plugs, you have to take your engine cover off, and you will see them straight away, there situated where you would normally have spark plugs on a petrol, with fuel line going in each one.....

cool, know exactly were you mean.. its what i thought they were.

Did nearly exactly the same thing. Is there any way of checking to see if a glow plug is gone. Think ill just change them myself - my local garage is pretty useless and its in its 3rd year of warrenty so cant see them being covered and if they charge the fee to look at it to diagnose the problem is bout the same amount to replace all of them out my pocket.

did the garage replace yours free of charge?

there is a way of testing them, i think you basically, take engine cover off, get someone to keep switching the ignition on and off, and see which plugs warm up, or dont as the case may be, the ones which dont get warm are faulty i think

also, have alook at the fuse box in the engione bay, theres some big fueses, not 100%sure which one is for glow plugs but think there is a diagram on back of cover, check its not blown first, process of elimination mate

Glow plug control module.

Best testing via resistance check, but also checking wiring at the module for signs of overheating of wires.

thanks T, mine were just basic checks, id put money it being the control module

think you are right... the bracket for the control module was bent were had been get me hands, socket set, etc in and out around there. Sorted it out, was the wires a wiggle and its all fine. Will see what happens in the morning from a first thing cold start though.

read through a few threads before i posted this and it made a difference putting me clutch down before i started her this morning when she was struggling.

Just to clear this up- glow plugs are an electrical item, they don't have fuel lines going to them. ;)

They're not that easy to change without experience- difficult to access and a small, fine thread that's easily cross-threaded if you're not carefull.

There's a fairly simple diagnostic procedure to run through (and is more involved than just checking for a feed and earth at the glowplug ECU), but the simplest and easiest part that quickly rules out the usual causes of faults is a resistance check along the wiring to the individual plugs. ECU failure is rare, usually it's a glowplug or two.

There's also a procedure to go through for the ECU to 'self-check' before it resumes normal operation, just deleting the error won't be enough. ;)

Guys Ive just had this message come up on my van its a 65 plate with 19K miles on it !!
would this be covered under the warranty ??

Thanks
Rob

Here's the 1.9 drawing, I guess it's very similar on the 1.3 ... where M015 is the pre-heat controller and A040 are th 4 glowplugs.

BTW: Nothing would happen if you'd respected this very basic safety rule : ALWAYS disconnect the battery before attempting anything in the engine bay or obviously on electric circuit !

Hi
When i first bought my 1.3 multijet punto, it had the glow plug message displayed
So simply just bought 4 new ones (NGK) installed them and message gone, car runs well,

Cleaned the old ones and kept them as backup

Did you check (ohm-meter) them ? Cleaning is just useless if they're open or short to ground ...

Nah
But will get around to it if i need to,
The ngk ones are about $16 - $20 ish or so,

So worse case being that i will go buy another 4, not too bothered about that,

Anyway, on another note, i'm gonna do an oil change on my 2007 1.3 punto - i have the oil but not sure on which filter to get ( euro 4 or 5 )

I know i could just drain then look but would like to still drive during the time it takes to get sent out to me (drive to work etc)

Was gonna make a new post but thought i should ask here first

Any help appreciated
Cheers
