Hi guys, I realise there are loads of threads on wheel bearing issues but I was just wondering if any of those that have had bearings replaced had the same symptoms as mine.
It is a deep, low whirring noise which you can hear from 30-70 after which it either trails off or is drowned out by other road noise. Also, weirdly it goes away completely when you turn right which is whats making me think it might nor be a bearing.
Also when I phoned t GMD in Durham they said they would have to charge a diagnostic fee of £75! Is this right?

Car is a GPS M-jet on an 07plate with 37,000 miles on it. So will be a third year warrenty job.

Cheers in advance for any help.

i had my rear passenger wheel bearing replaced on my m-jet, had the same noise as you described, however i cant recall it going away when turning right? maybe something to do with weight transfer.

what wheel do you think it is coming from.

i had my bearing replaced under 3rd year warrenty, didnt cost me a penny. old bearing was knackard as water had gotten into it.

Well I assume its probably the rear drivers side wheel as that would explain why the noise goes away when the weight is transferred off that wheel?!? Sound logical?

So I am guessin when you say it cost you nothing they didnt charge you in the first place for diagnosis?

i would think that if it were the drivers side then more weight would be transfered onto it when turning right? i could be wrong tho.

my car was booked in to have something else looked at and i also mentioned the wheel bearing, guy took it a drive and confirmed, so i guess that was the diagnostic. i get on well with the fiat service guy at my dealer so he may have done me a favor and not charged me.

i think its £75 diagnostic fee, but im sure you get that back if they find anything.

Ok cheers for all the help. Might take it into Fiat or might jus take it to my local garage and pay and save the hassel. I meant it goes away when going round faster right handers therefore the weight is thrown to the outside of the car and onto the passenger side wheel. I could of course be entirely wrong. Anyway think the only thing it can be is the bearing so will get it looked at.
Thanks again.

ok, trade price for the bearing is around £50 +vat, so no idea what an independent garage will charge if you take it there.

Comes as part of the hub IIRC, mine was replaced no charge in the 3rd year warranty, took 45 mins at my dealers. Oh and passenger side rear seems favourite...

Passenger side too.

You may find your dealer only charges you the diagnostic if

A> They dont find anything
or
B> They find something and warranty doesnt cover it.
or
C> They find something covered by warranty, but extended diagnosis was needed which isnt covered on 3rd year.
