I've got a 56 GP 16k miles. For the last 3-4 days i've noticed when i'm changing from 1st to 2nd or pulling away from the lights/junction I can hear a vibrating sound from the front of the car. It doesn't do it from 2nd to 3rd etc just the lower gears. I thought it might be the exhaust as thats were the sound seems to be coming from. Theres no problems with gears, no vibration on the clutch pedal or gear stick. Has anyone else had this or knows what it could be? Its going in on thursday but need to know if to prepare myself for a hefty bill or not :bang:

Just been out and pipe did seem a little loose so had a play around with the rubber lugs. Went for a short drive and even holding the car with the clutch and rpms at 300 its disappeared. No noise from standing at the lights....and to think it was something so small and simple! Might sound like a stupid questions but why would it only happen from 1st to 2nd and none of the other gears is it something to do with the amount or air intake they require? (Sorry just curious now)

Superb, had this same noise happening on my 07 Punto for weeks now and haven't bothered trying to get into a garage. The rubber is worn away so have just cable tied it for now, test drive and no more noise. Amazing how a small thing like that can cause the vibration and noise that I have been having!

Jand to think it was something so small and simple!

there is a 'thanks' button you can press;)

Finding noises can be very stressful & time consuming, most customers are understanding luckily enough(y)

i had the exact same problem with my 06 1.2 active. I tried fixing it but the lug kept coming out of the gromet. Best thing to do it just cable tie it there.

As a follow up to this.......
I first noticed a rattle on start-up and over-run a few months ago. At first I suspected something in the exhaust but after a poke around without finding anything I then started jumping to conclusions and started to think it could be the g/box.....arrrggghhh!
However I was extremely relieved when I found the air-intake pipe was very loose on its fixing. I was even more relieved when I found all the noise/rattles dissapeared when I cable-tied it to the metal bracket.

This pic shows the pipe tied to the bracket and was taken while standing over the driver side wing.

I ordered a replacement from my dealer, I was a bit upset to find the bush only comes with the metal bracket at a cost of £6.54 but what can you do :(. Truth is the new part been sat in my garage for the last couple of months but reading this thread has spurned me into action and I replaced it today.

This pic shows the old and new parts, new one being on the right. The wear is pretty obvious.

Close ups...old worn bush first.

.....and the new one.

Difference between new and old is amazing, the noise that the worn bush generated was unbelieveable, the car is now as quiet as it was the day I drove it off the forecourt 40k miles and 2 yrs and 23 months ago (y)

To summerise:
Cost of part...£6.54
Time taken to replace...2 mins tops.
Tools needed... 10mm Ring-spanner.
Tea?...yes please (no sugar)
Biscuits?... a mint kit-kat will do nicely.

Downsides:
The Cost of part, £6.54 inc vat...ouch!
The fact the bush is sold only with the metal bracket which in my case didnt need replacing and I cant see it ever needing to be unless the fixing stud/nut rusts or strips its thread.
It appears the new part is identical to the old and made of similar material which means in theory it will wear out again in another 3 years.

Upsides:
A huge reduction in the amount of underbonnet noise.

I strongly reccommend everyone with a 1.2 GP of similar vintage to mine checks the condition of this bush. If you find yours is worn, a replacement will make a big improvement. Find time to have a quick look over the weekend (y)

Ok so I have uploaded a sound/mov file to youtube.

2009 Fiat Punto 1.4 Sports Turbo - the strange noise you can hear occurs as soon as I take my foot of the accelerator. This noise also happens when I begin to decent down a hill and change the gears from 3rd to 2nd and down to 1st if required. This sound test was done in 1st gear. What I was doing is driving along a quiet street accelerating to about 30km/h in 1st gear then releasing my foot from the accelerator. The noise you hear is as soon as I release my foot from the accelerator.

Any ideas?

Please someone help me work out what this is.
