As a follow up to this.......
I first noticed a rattle on start-up and over-run a few months ago. At first I suspected something in the exhaust but after a poke around without finding anything I then started jumping to conclusions and started to think it could be the g/box.....arrrggghhh!
However I was extremely relieved when I found the air-intake pipe was very loose on its fixing. I was even more relieved when I found all the noise/rattles dissapeared when I cable-tied it to the metal bracket.
This pic shows the pipe tied to the bracket and was taken while standing over the driver side wing.
I ordered a replacement from my dealer, I was a bit upset to find the bush only comes with the metal bracket at a cost of £6.54 but what can you do
. Truth is the new part been sat in my garage for the last couple of months but reading this thread has spurned me into action and I replaced it today.
This pic shows the old and new parts, new one being on the right. The wear is pretty obvious.
Close ups...old worn bush first.
.....and the new one.
Difference between new and old is amazing, the noise that the worn bush generated was unbelieveable, the car is now as quiet as it was the day I drove it off the forecourt 40k miles and 2 yrs and 23 months ago
To summerise:
Cost of part...£6.54
Time taken to replace...2 mins tops.
Tools needed... 10mm Ring-spanner.
Tea?...yes please (no sugar)
Biscuits?... a mint kit-kat will do nicely.
Downsides:
The Cost of part, £6.54 inc vat...ouch!
The fact the bush is sold only with the metal bracket which in my case didnt need replacing and I cant see it ever needing to be unless the fixing stud/nut rusts or strips its thread.
It appears the new part is identical to the old and made of similar material which means in theory it will wear out again in another 3 years.
Upsides:
A huge reduction in the amount of underbonnet noise.
I strongly reccommend everyone with a 1.2 GP of similar vintage to mine checks the condition of this bush. If you find yours is worn, a replacement will make a big improvement. Find time to have a quick look over the weekend
