Technical Noise from under bonnet?

Did a 6 hour drive yesterday and when i got about half a mile from home I had the same noise as the OP stated. I know nothing about cars and need an arrow pointing to the car problem to see it. Thanks to Sledge I managed to fix the problem, the air intake grommit was more or less out of the metal plate, I cable tied it to make sure it stays where it should - no more noise!!!

Couldn't have done it without the pictures!

After reading this thread and having a poke around just saved myself alot of worry, managed to reset the rubber fitting back in for now. *goes buys 100 cabe ties :p* thanks to op for pics (y)

cheers for the photos, I had the same issue and a cable tie sorted it, was worried it was the gearbox or some other expensive fix.

I wonder why its suddenly such a common fault? Maybe the weather?

why not just bond the rubber to the metal bracket works everytime saves buying a new one or making it look untidy with cableties

Does this same problem affect t-jets? I ask because they are turbo charged and therefore have different inlet systems. Does the noise sound almost metallic in nature? Like an empty foild take-away tray? My t-jet makes a rattling sound at lowish revs and high load; I assumed it was a metal heat shield vibrating but now I’m not so sure. I'll look when its light and I have a few mins.

No the T-Jet has a airfilter housing next to the offside wing as opposed to being located on top of the engine as seen on the 1.2/1.4 8valves. As for your rattle noise i've had it before where engine underguard gets hit and pushes up at the rear and the metal heatshield placed at the rear of it catches on the exhaust i'd check that if i was you

Difference between new and old is amazing, the noise that the worn bush generated was unbelieveable, the car is now as quiet as it was the day I drove it off the forecourt 40k miles and 2 yrs and 23 months ago (y)

To summerise:
Cost of part...£6.54
Time taken to replace...2 mins tops.
Tools needed... 10mm Ring-spanner.
Tea?...yes please (no sugar)
Biscuits?... a mint kit-kat will do nicely.

Downsides:
The Cost of part, £6.54 inc vat...ouch!
The fact the bush is sold only with the metal bracket which in my case didnt need replacing and I cant see it ever needing to be unless the fixing stud/nut rusts or strips its thread.
It appears the new part is identical to the old and made of similar material which means in theory it will wear out again in another 3 years.

I have replaced the metal bracket/bush part but the intake pipe is still very loose, and can still hear a rattle going over speedbumbs etc. Should the intake pipe be firm and secure? I can shoogle mine around effortlessly.

Thanks for pics and advice guys. I originally thought it was an exhaust issue. A few cable ties and the noise has gone! Phew!

Just got my 07 GP back from a service last week to hear a rather worrysome vibration from the car at low revs.

Had a looksy under the bonnet and yes, the air intake pipe was rather loose on the mount!

Good to hear that the new mount etc isn't too expensive, meanwhile I've duct taped the pipe to the bracket! (y) No more rattles!

I know i'm bringing up an old thread here but I just found this from doing some searching about because I had this issue and the guide in this thread has fixed it, I'm so happy haha that noise was really getting to me :bang:, I love this site!! :worship:

Hi, I found this thread when searching for a rattle in my '11 Fiat 500c 1.2.

The car made the rattle at low speeds, and sounded a bit like the bottle thing you hear rattling when moving a fridge! Metallic and hollow.

Anyway, this thread correctly pointed me to the air intake, so thank you very much! Two cable ties later, (only had small ties, so I used two to make a bigger one), the rattle is gone.

I'm adding pictures of where the offending rattling pipe is on the 500, to help future people:
