Just an update on this. Contacted local dealer for a goodwill gesture, even though warranty was now more than a month out of date. Tested as: steering motor needs replacing. Said they would do it if we paid 10% (£60) so very happy with the result. Just goes to show if you don't ask, ya don't get. Part alone from BBA reman was £250 + VAT. Thanks to all who replied/guided me in the right direction.

Wow mines 2 weeks out of warranty i wonder if they would fix my leather steering wheel??

Had this done on mine. Be careful there are 2 steering wheel motors and despite a call to BBA there wasn't one of my type available. Mine is an 06 plate and had only done 18,000 mine in March when this happened - it was 1 month out of warranty too. It cost me just shy of £ 700 to get the part from fiat inc labour at my local independent garage. It then had to be plugged into the fiat computer thingy whatsit doodah which took about 20 minutes and made me £30 lighter - shop around for the Fiat garage to do the plug in bit though as it was £55 at my local, but the one my independent dealer got the part from was £35! The plug in thing was down to Fiat not wanting to give the codes to my indpendent garage as they could change the identity of the vehicle in the management system of some other such garbage!
You can drive the car without the plug in and the ABS will work, you just lose the hill holder and the other function that goes with.
Unfortunately I had to wait 2 weeks for mine to be plugged into the fiat thingy as it was in Italy being calibrated!

Like has been said before though check with BBA as since March things may have changed. Don't go for second hand as it seems to be a common problem and you could end up having to replace it again in 6 weeks!

How much did the independent garage charge you:eek:

stereing callibration has nothing to do with any codes, its down to having manufacture specific equipment.

As it's in the column cowl is it not a DIY exercise.

Take off, match part and then refit ?
