Good stuff eh Bri........but when are you going to tell the boys on HJ that you got a result? I am sure that after the epic rant based thread you left them with they will also be made up to hear its finaly come to an end....ZZzzzzz.

I still think its down to your son abusing it. If i blew my gearbox through abusing my car and my dad kept questioning me if i had been hammering it i would also deny it.

so would I ....but i'd own up eventually as my consience would ge the better of me!....................I actually left the freezer door open one night but dont tell beko:devil:

Thanks for your posts ... see see my thread 'engine over rev logged' for exactly the same gearbox problem on a well driven Grande, but with what so far is a bad outcome as Fiat are using the spurious over rev log (every Fiat has many logged no matter how careful you are) from their management system to invalidate warranty claims.

i had a punto mk2 i bought with only 50k on the clock. paid £1300 and 5 weeks later needed new clutch and radiator fan, couple weeks later power steering light came on constantly and the steering wheel would become stiff. 3 weeks later gearbox went so spent £400 including labour and 3 months warranty. in the end i gave up on the b***trd and sold it for £1100. lost £900 in 9 weeks!!!! m8 had a mk2 4 door as a family car aswell and not even abused. 5 weeks after buying needed new engine. i personally think mk2 are completely useless. ive had a mk1 and it ran lovely for 12 months till i wrote it off :bang: . just bought another mk1 85sx yesterday and coming down the motorway engine blew up. now ive got a £400 bill on my head. im put off puntos now completely. and to think i was planning on getting a GT!!! CREDIT CRUNCH HAS HIT ME:worship:

Hi there

I'm 18 and have a 1.4 8v active sport GP and just recently, the synchros for third have took a turn for the worst. I admit i drive it like it probably wasn't desgined for. Changing gear at 6500 as well as flat shifting. My current MPG is 24.6 if that helps to compare with your sons.

Gearbox wise, i have to change gear slowly from now on otheriwise third wont engage. I have a friend with a punto as well and has the same problems with third as well.

I have a tip though, to reduce the stress on the gearbox on downshift, match the revs through bliping or heal and toe. I have noticed a signifcant difference, and so far third is getting better..

hope that helps

Had my mk2 since new (nearly 7 years & 80,000) with not a single problem. I think you brought a duff one (or poorly maintained) and like many here we think the mk2 is a good car.

n.b. this is the Grande punto section not the mk2 section.

You make me laugh :worship: :nutter:

Only condoning thing about your post is the fact you don't blame Fiat for it breaking lol (y).

You cant make it better lol its not a human, once you have done the damage it wont heal itself lol. God knows how you are getting 24.6 out a 8v i dont even get that out my Tjet.

16v's are more efficent. And not really. But i'm flat chat everywhere. I dont do much motorway driving so its all cross country blasts :D

Lies, driven "wisely" 8v will always be more economical. It has half the valves so doesn't have anywhere near the capability to flow as much gas as the 16v hence use less fuel. I dare say if you did the same drive in the 16v'er you'd get worse economy.
