Technical EGR cleaned/no power probs.

Doesnt sound like it's doing the usual EGR valve symptoms of flat spot followed by power surge but I guess they do different things depending on how they fail (stuck fully open or fully shut).

Mine was replaced FOC by Fiat under 2nd year warranty although I think T said that it's covered in the 3rd year warranty as well.... Is your GP out of warranty now?

*Edit* Sorry just spotted your OP stating that it's an '06 plate GP. Wouldn't that mean you're still covered by Fiat warranty until 3 years after it's date of first registration (March 09>)???????

Update:
well, just back from fiat, and the EGR is buggered. 2 hours after dropping it off, the car was back outside, and the guy was putting it through as a warranty claim, and fiat said yes, so part on order, and hopefully fitted before the end of the week.

Slight surprise today, as i walked up to SAAB as their EGR looks identical from what i've seen on the saab forum and asked about, so I went to check their price and the plug fitting, and they had 2 in stock, so managed to have a look at one, and as far as i can tell, they are identical, same plug on the end. the shocker was the price though.

Fiat quoted me a price on friday of £180+vat for a new unit, whereas SAAB want £83 inc vat for the same thing. If i'd had to buy one, i know where i'd be doing my shopping! Even the gaskets are cheaper in SAAB, £1.48+vat in fiat, none in stock, £1.02 inc vat in SAAB.

Oh well, i think every 4-5 months, my EGR will be coming out for a clean up, to make sure it doesnt get as bad as it was when i opened it up last week.

thanks for all the info and help that you all gave. fingers crossed by the weekend, the car wont be afraid of hills any more.

Wouldnt hurt (except for the wallet) to ask for the EGR to be cleaned out at major service time, maybe every 3 / 4 months is a bit OTT

OTT is fine by me mate, at least then i'll know the state of that the EGR is in. Mate of mine does the servicing for me.

Cool dude whatever works for you (y)

Bit of a lottery really, in 43,000 miles I had no EGR issues at all (touch wood) even with my re-map. I have no idea why, it gets some good long runs fairly regularly, booted now and again, and almost exclusively use Shell Extra diesel with Shell Helix oil.

yeah, just one of those things I guess. only done 6k since having the car, but its been a mix of runs and a few boots to keep things going.

I remember on the 206, they could just blank off the EGR with a ball bearing in the hose, and all was well.

I've heard of some people suffering turbo failures after blanking off mate, not specifically Fiat though (Renault IIRC) Frustrating for you, hope it all gets sorted so you can get on with enjoying the car again!

Hi T,

both the fiat garages here wanted £108+vat for a reconditoned unit, and £180+vat for new.
The Saab unit was new at £83 inc vat, parts guy confirmed it and the guy who bought one for his saab said same. Saab parts guy looked at me all funny when I asked if it was a refurbed unit.

The plugs and everything about the 2 units, the fiat one on my car at the mo, and the saab unit, is identical. would they work in any different way?? I dont know the in's and out's of the EGR, but i'd imagine they just open and close, and as such, i the connectors and bits are the same, then wouldnt they work in exactly the same way, wether it be in the fiat or saab, as the engine is the same.

yeah mate. the one the car was bought from originally and where i was today, and the next nearest one to me. prices were about £3-4 different, with the garage i went ot being more expensive, but a few quid is nothing. the big pain for me was, that if i was faced with buying an EGR, i'd be paying well over £200 in fiat, but only £83 in saab for what i can see as being the same thing.

from what you know, T, would they work in the exact same way on the 120 saab and the 130 fiat engine?

well, part was ordered monday, came in wed, and was booked in for today.

reconditioned EGR put in, and so far so good, half hour drive home, and the term 'like sh*t off a stick' sprung to mind lol

Gonna fill up and give it a blast later, but definately 100000% better than before, and much more punch than when i picked the car up in september.

turbo kicking in very early, and plenty of power.

quick question though, i asked the guy in fiat and he said he'd get back to me, but whats the situation with warranty now? the cars 3rd yr runs out on the 13th march, so is the EGR waranted till a year from today, or runs out when 3rd year does?

Hi, i'm a new member here so be nice to me :)

i booked my 56' 1.9 sporting gp into local garage for a service as the "service coupon expired" flashed up with spanner on dash

according to the garage its not due for another 1000 miles but i booked it anyway, now the bad bit, the cars started giving me all the signs of an EGR problem, engine light on dash(orange) and severe lack of power then sudden rush of power and its just not feeling right to drive as its unpredictable.

i called fiat dealer and told service manager that local garage suspects EGR problem so i should book it in for warranty job, all good so far.

the service manager said "we can replace the EGR but if thats not the problem then you'll be liable for cost of anything else it needs to rectify the problem as we cant make more than one claim for same problem"

i suggested that rather than replace the EGR maybe they could plug car into computer and find fault first, his reply was that should be ok but we do ask for an hr to do that and ask what method of payment you will be using

i've had problems with Fiat service before and i'm not wanting to go through the same hassle again with this, any suggestions from you guys would be most welcome

jees, i go on a bit eh !

garage should replace no parts until 100% sure of fault or because another garage says so....if its wrong will they fork out the cash?

yes i can understand that part, i'm not so sure why he wants to know what method of payment i'll be using as i'm assuming they will plug it in and whatever they find will then be rectified under the 3rd yr warranty.
