Yes I know there has been a lot of threads concerning the EGR valve. I have searched thru them, but can' find the answer I'm after.:bang:

Is cleaning the EGR Valve part of a scheduled service or is it something that is covered under warranty? Anyone out there, know the answer to this?

I have the 1.3 90 bhp model and have noticed a loss of power mainly during acceleration from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th. But I do not have any engine warning lights lit up on my dashboard..

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can tell us why a cleaned EGR wont last long? :confused: I plan to clean mine, it SHOULD be a Service item IMO as they are known to clog up, some makes are worse than others due to design but driving style and fuel quality are important factors.

£200 on a new EGR every how often? Doesnt really make sense to me... EGR failure (closed) can cause turbo failure...
 
My experience of EGR valves over a 12 year period owning Vauxhalls, ie Astra, 2 x Carltons & an Omega, all petrol engines, but the same principle applies, that is to re circulate crankcase gases back to the combustion cylinders for re burning. Its an enviromental emmisions issue. Years ago these gases were just released to the atmosphere.

The principle works sound in theory, especialy with a new car, but after a couple of years and X amount of thousands of miles, those crankcase gases start to pick up oil from the worn cylinders, so your gases now become an oil mist, this gets deposited into the EGR valve & associated pipework, we have all seen the photographic evidence posted on this forum.

So yes you've got to remove the EGR valve & clean it, in my experience with petrol Vauxhall,s with mileages over 50K it used to be a 6 monthly job, cant remember how many times Iv'e done this (too many) but its allways been successful & Iv'e never had to renew one.

Not if 60 quid an hour became a more realistic 40 quid an hour T. C'mon more than 1 way to skin a cat! Lower cost = more work, and work is what everyone wants right now, and value for money. I had a quote of 20 quid to do my EGR cleaning. But then I suppose there would be less weird engine running faults for dealers to get to look at by bemused Customers suffering EGR faults eh?:p

My lawyer charges me £150 hour! BT man wanted £110 to knock on my door & £80 per hour after walking past the front door, electrician wanted £240 to change 2 light pendents & change 2 sockets:confused:

Its ridiculous to single out the motor trade for overcharging. The costs of running a garage is unreal (staff,training,insurances,tools & criteria to meet dealer standars) however the option to go through the independent garage is always available.

A recon EGR is around £80, i'll replace it insteard of cleaning it then having to go through the whole process again a few months down the line especially in the case of the 1.3MJ engine.

All those silly charges will change soon T trust me. Its no justification that other people rip us off so garages can as well. Fiat must know their EGR design choice is poor. Having said that mine isnt affected yet but I WILL clean it. A new one wont last any longer. Unless some magic has been weaved to stop the coking up. (which I doubt)

You cant blame Fiat for the EGR's, all manufactuers are changing them (vauxhall & ford have been for years) and you could say its the goverments (Thatcher!) fault in the first place because of EOBD legislation.

We could however have the same argument of starter motors/alternators or even changing bulbs on some cars as these are all serviceable items yet often you have to remove subframes,drivesafts,bumpers etc.

With more demands (in terms of performance, economy & emissions) on manufactures and more demands on space/looks/specification (by the customer) cars will increasingly become more harder to work on and maintain therefore garages will be more in demand.£40-50/hr is normal in my area for dealerships with 10% discount for cars over 3 years old & 20% for cars over 5.

I know how we both differ often on this subject but daily I see customers who have fitted this part & then this part then this mechanic guy he knows told him it was this that was wrong etc....in the end the customer has spent over £3-400 and got nowhere yet in a hour the fault is diagnosed and part fitted by dealer.Lets not forget that dealer labour charges must take into account 'knowledge' which takes years to attain and at the end of the day if you can provide a service that no one else can (fixing the car) then yeah you should pay for it even if a little over the odds after all the idea is to survive & make money.

Yet, I won't be naive and say that customers dont get ripped off as like every business they do as much as it annoys me, but as the risk of sounding harsh there is a certain amount of onus on the customer to do some reasearch (i.e. phone around) as we do when we buy a TV, washing machine (that device in the kitchen with a porthole on the front?) mobile phone etc...

Too much there for me to spam.... errrm reply to so I'll just stick with asking my garage to clean out my EGR at major service time and pay my Council Tax so I dont go to prison. (y)
 
Its good to differ........or they would be no forum!

I was willing to go to jail over poll tax (which we had for few years before south of border) as you have to make a stand (support was strong up north at the time) and refused to pay until wife wanted to buy house but couldn't have mortgage until I payed over £2500:mad:
 
Dont know about cleaning but Fiat were more than happy to change my EGR valve for a new one under 2nd year warranty :)

On the note of Fiat labour rates, as I was saying to T the other day my local dealer is quoting me £98 an hour labour on the 2nd year service - £485 for the service, breaking down into £216 for parts and £269 for labour (quoted at 2.75 hours works out at £97.82/hour) :eek:
