Well took my car into the garage for a recall. They are now saying it needs new disks and pads. Disks are corroded? Warranty?

Discs shouldn't rust unless the car has been sitting unused for quite a while.

The friction from braking acts almost like sandpaper and keeps them shiny.

If the discs are rusty though they will probably have scored the pads, so they would need replacing.
 
my cars done the same mileage mate...just put mine in for a new set of pads...not on the dealers orders either...I just felt they were quite faded so wanted some new one's as I do loads of motorway miles.

Cost for a set of 4 brake pads was 120 fitted. so that means they're charging you 50 quid a disk which although steep probably isn't far wrong. especially with fitting.

If you're on about the surface rust that normally happens when brakes have been standing for abit and get wet...normally it comes off with some use and isn't anything to worry about. If it's something more then personally i'd try and argue a warrenty repair although pads and disks aren't normally covered i'd still give it a go.
 
They said on my last service that mine are worn down alot.

Now, I have a question (I havent got a clue about this stuff)

I have alloys, with a unique locking bolts, on all 4 studs in each wheel. I didn't leave them the adapter, so if they didn't take the wheels off did they really check and see that they were '80% worn' ?

by the looks of it your wheels have masive spaces between the spokes.

they would easily be able to see pad thickness and see/feel excessive wear/scoring ont he discs.
 
Are the GP discs and pads bespoke to just that car or can we get the full dimensions to choose from some aftermarket kit?
 
aftermarket are already producing them.

red dot for example do pads and mroe than likely have discs ready to go.

i thinkt he rear discs ont he multi-t-jet are the same as front discs on lower spec models. ill confirm that later on tho when i can be assed.
 
Sounds like they are taking you for a ride if you ask me, getting money for "unneccesary" work.

Discs should not need replacing after 29k for sure. so if there is a problem then it should defo be warranty.

I agree mostly but it does depend on use and individual driving "style" to be honest, thats why brakes are not a warranty item for normal wear and tear. I will say that the discs do seem soft on the GPS though. I dont use my brakes hard but after 37000 miles I do have quite a lip on the edge. First chance I get I will be cleaning and stripping them to make a call on a time to replace but I'll do it myself.

Nice one Claw... I'm def interested in that! Do you have a GP yourself now then? Been meaning to ask for a bit, or do you still have the blue Punto you took to Red Dot RR in Sept?

Thats what I thought. It only went in for a recal and engine knocking aswell.

i agree it depends on the driving style but they still shouldnt have gone yet. i have a clio 1.2 that i have driven for 120k mostly quite hard and its still on its first discs fine.
 
Yeah, there is no way your discs should need replacing, only reason they should is if there is a manufacturing error with them in which case it will be a warranty issue, or you've somehow managed to damage, god knows how though.

28k on first pads is good going though....i only got 17 out of mine :S
 
depends on the condition of the discs. at the moment Fiat are making mechanics carry out a VHC on every single vehicle that comes in the workshop. so chances are that they have found a problem and arent trying to rip you off.

either that they are buggered and need replacing or that they are on there way out and wont alst much longer, could be warped aswell.


FFoxy - yer i got a t-jet nowadays and sold the blue punto to my bro. GP's ar ein a different league. tend to be the main car we work on in the garage.

Unfortunately guys you seem to be forgetting that environmental conditions make a huge difference to how a car behaves and how it wears. For instance, park a car overnight within a mile of the sea and you will get more corrosion to the brake discs than if you parked further away. Not just that but the pads can corrode to the caliper slides, repeated corroding overnight can cause long term problems. Another example, if I live in Norfolk, (nice and flat and no hills to speak of) I dont need to use my brakes as heavily as if I was driving up and down mountains or hills in Scotland, it will also effect my fuel consumption and perhaps a gearbox and clutch use. Also if you have huge gaps in alloy wheels then you will allow more water onto your brakes, likewise if you clean those alloy wheels with alloy wheel cleaner or acid, this effects your brake surface and the caliper slides etc.

Its difficult to quantify how much this effects vehicles but it is a consideration that techs take into account when they advise how long parts such as pads will last. They also try to take into account the type of driving the vehicle is used for, this is easier said than done.
