Hi,

i accidently bent the pins in the usb port when i went to plug in my usb device because i forgot to put in the lead first. when i went to fiat they were charging me £400 for the part + labour...which is ridiculous!

does that part really cost that much? any1 got any ideas where i can get the usb port (its located in the glove compartment) for cheaper?

thanks

And 3 Threads on the same subject is plenty!

I would imagine, tho I may be wrong, that the dash may have to come out to warrant THAT sort of charge!

Fitting may be pi*s easy once the rear has been accessed....

I havnt read the entire thread so forgive me if im saying something thats already been said.

A usb port connector cost about 1.79 from maplin even cheaper if you look hard http://buy.maplin.co.uk/Free_UK_Delivery/Mini_USB_Plug__5-Pin___43998_v2.htm

The problem with bent usb pins is when they touch each other they can blow vital chips on the host device.

So perhaps part of your cars computer are blown and fiat have taken this into account.

I work in the PC industry and constantly see motherboards blown by broken usb pins badly wired usb cable and worse faulty devices.

Be careful what you plug into that usb port even a faulty usb device can blow stuff up.

I wouldn’t skimp on the quality of USB devices either. Buy a quality brand like Kingston or Corsair. If you plug a cheapy usb pen drive in that cost 50pence to make and it blows your very expensive car computer that’s a very bad mistake. Also the return rate of cheap unbranded kit is massive.

Use the usb port under the blanking plate.

Worked on mine for the first month of owning mine until I realised you wern't supposed to use that one!! - The blanking plate had fallen off and I just used the first USB I saw.

Whats this mystery, second usb port i dont know about :confused::confused:
There is a second USB port in the glove box. Top right under a blanking plate, just prise it off with a screwdriver. I use it to charge my sat nav while its in the glovebox so its always on charge in the car out of view. I didnt know you could use the second usb for the media player tho.

Wait - what the hell, this is the one I have been using.. which has now broken...
