Hi, just wondering if any of you GP owners out there, have had this problem before?

I was checking my oil, and when I checked the dip-stick for the level, there was no oil deposit on the stick? I did this plenty of times, and still nothing?
Now this is the interesting part. I have had a service on the vehicle (oil and filter change ect…) in April 08, and for argument sake I had only done 7000miles, and now further down the line in August 08, I have done 10,000miles.

So by doing 3000miles within a 5month period, it appears that I have no oil? I understand that the dip-stick does not hit the bottom of the oil tank. So there is still some oil in there.

I did not receive a warning light on the dash to check my oil, it was just one of those random occasions that I decided, that I should really check my oil?

No oil is being left on the drive, so safe from leaks.

I am not noticing any blue smoke coming from the exhaust?

Now, I have filled up the oil tank with the recommended grade in the hand book, and went straight to the dealer, to see a mechanic. I told him the problem above, and he reckons that these cars burn oil quickly, and should be topped up with oil quite regularly. His assumption (forgive me if I am wrong) is that for every 1000km the oil burns a litre! That is only 621miles! And the tank only holds around 2.8litres of oil! So this seems ridiculous to me, and seems that I have been made a fool!

I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Or knows what problems may be potentially happening?

FYI, I don’t go hell for leather in my car, and usually use it to commute to work ect…. It is a 07plate GP, 1.4 16v Sporting, if this makes any difference?

Thanks for your help or advice in advance,

Cheers

Dave

Unless the 1.4 is peculiar in that way the mechanic is talking bulsh*t, I never have to top up at all between services, I check the oil level twice a week. Was your engine hot or cold when you dipped it?

I had been out for about ten minutes running the car, so the engine was hot. Probably left it for 5minutes, and checked the oil, and that was my result?
Yeah i defo think that i have been told bull*hit!! You should not have to top up oil that frequently???

New engines do waste a bit until bedded in but it sounds like it was either not filled to the correct level or you might have waited a bit longer to dip it, maybe 20 - 30 mins so all the oil could drain down to the sump. Thats what I would do, it makes a big difference and an over-filled sump is a disaster waiting to happen :(

Was the car on level ground when you checked it ?. Where i park it is on a slope to the right so i get a higher reading than normal  A while ago i did a 1000 mile round trip to Morecambe in 2 days and never used a drop of oil.

the guy is chatting bull mate, never heard of a car using that much oil in such a short time, as its under warrenty get them to check it and let them keep the car for a bit, abuse fiats warrenty system, that could end up costing you a bit in oil, but before any thing like the others said check the oil on flat road and leave it for 5/10mins before checking!

tel us kow how you get on mate!

Yeah the oil was checked on a flat plane, so there was no slope to confuse the dip-stick reading? I believe that my 5minutes after i stopped the engine to check the oil, is more like 20-25! I remember now, because the engine was very cool, and you could touch the engine parts. So the oil had settled.

Yeah i think that i will have to take advantage of the warrenty that Fiat have given me.

The mechanic, did have a look around the engine, just to see if anything was visibly wrong. But i must admit i did get the impression that he did not want to strip the engine down and do a proper check, and just told me to come back in two or so weeks to check the level again, to see if oil is being lossed at a dramatic rate! I think i'll just force them to look at the car in detail......

Need to look around harder then. HGT's use a litre of oil to 1000 miles along with plenty of other cars.

Ive not had a problem with my Tjet so far. Checked it at the weekend, ive done 4000 miles and its hardly used a drop! I was expecting it to drink the stuff.

that does sound like a lot, but my stilo 1.8 16v use to go through a 3/4Litre contain of oil between services! It used about a litre every 3k miles. Saying that ive done a round trip to germany and back 2.5k in my GPS and the oil level didnt even move... and done about 8k in 4/5months now and the oil level hasnt moved at all, i still check weekly though.

Contact fiat customer care 08003890019 and see what they say about it?

a litre every 600 odd miles, will cost you a packet between services! Especially if you use selenia

my 1.2 8V used a fair bit of oil about 1/2 to 3/4 a ltr for the first 5K miles then after that it hasn't used a drop

And the Oil pressure warning light doesn't come on with a low amount of oil UNTIL it is causing a MAJOR problem as it detects a drop in oil pressure not the amount so if it comes on damage can already be happening

Bit out of tune here, but why is an over-filled sump a disaster waiting to happen?

I had my 1.9 Sporting M-jet serviced at my local dealer and when I checked the dipstick, it was some 15mm higher than the maximum oil level marked on it. Since then I have done about 3k miles and every Sunday I check the dipstick, it still shows some 15mm higher than the top mark of the dipstick. What can go wrong here?

For the record, I check the engine fluids every Sunday morning, when the car has been stationary all night. I may also add that I seldom had to add oil in the engine, during the first 15,000 miles I only added about half a litre of oil, and about half that before the 33,000 mile/2nd year service.

I remember from my days at Enterprise Rent-A-Car that Vauxhall ecotec petrol engines consumed a lot of oil during the first 6k miles, but not a litre every thousand kilometres! That sort of oil consumption is only appropriate to a dying engine or to a Wankel one!

I check my oil every week when im using the GPS regularly, I have the same engine as you, and while I have had to put a tiny bit in between services (I change the oil myself between services anyway) I have never had to top up anywhere near that much. Lots of engines use oil in normal use, Audi V6s, V8s and diesels are very bad for example, but your car sounds like it has a problem burning that much.
