Hi Everyone.

My 1.9 Grande Punto died on me last Friday and what a shock!
Luckily it happened outside my house.
Just want to know if anyone else has had this??

Pulling away in 1st gear the car lost all power, followed soon by white smoke. Luckily i coasted the car back to my house but when i turned the key the engine carried on revving and it just went out of control. Luckily managed to stall the engine after a while, however in that time everything around it got covered in oil and I had never seen so much white smoke appear from an exhaust.

Apparantly this is known in turbo diesel cars/vans? (is this true???)

I hope it all gets sorted just want some advice weather the engine will still be ok, or i should ask Fiat to check other parts? They say they have ordered a new turbo and exhaust.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Scary! 1st I have heard of though... be interesting to see what the dealer says was the cause... probably a duff component or blocked oilway...

Did you have the habit of letting the turbo spin down for a few seconds before turning off the engine every time u stopped the car?

Engine oil sucked into cylinders through turbo which leads to runaway engine speed. This is not a unheard of problem on some diesels. Never heard of it happening on a GP but anything is poss. With regards to engine damage it would really depend on what sort of speed it reached.

Ive read a fair bit about the engine revving out of control on Renault 1.9 DCI engines when the turbo fails on them. It seems linked to a sticking EGR valve on them. It's especially nerve wracking for drivers when you factor in the push button start/stop that alot of Renaults have.

Not heard of it happenning on Fiat JTDs or Multijets, so itd be interesting to know if Fiat use the same Garrett turbocharger that Renault used, as i did also read that it was this that caused the wrecked engine problems for them.

Mine didnt blow but was whistling for a while , it went in for some new turbo pipes and coolant problems but it didnt resolve the whistling and whining...took it back and a 2 weeks later i picked it up only to be told we have replace your turbo !!! engine now running better and returning better mpg....turbo lasted 22k on mine ...remapped after 17K also !

The cloud of white exhaust smoke, a classic blown turbo sign. Usually happens when its running too hot and the bearings fook up. Can't see why this should happen thats pretty unlucky.

Who remapped yours?

Thank for all the comments - the car is currently in the garage and they have got all the parts except one piece which has no ETA, so now getting a hire car. When I finally get the car back I will let everyone know what they said.

Seriously... I reckon this might be related to not warming down the turbo after a drive for a few seconds before switch off...

You shouldn't need to really its more of an issue for fixed geometry turbos? Or is it? Bearings and shaft are the same principal so maybe so. It may be an issue for the remapped diesels, but then again its different oil that lubricates the turbo than a petrol but nevertheless good point ffoxy.

Maybe its time for a turbo timer? Peter might be able to enlighten us.

Does anyone know what make of turbo is used on the engine concerned? If it's Garrett as i mentioned earlier, maybe its them that are troublesome, coz they give Renault loads of grief.

Hi Guys - thought I would give an update, after 4 weeks waiting for the car to be fixed I finally got it back. All fixed with a bill for £1500 from the garage (luckily all under warranty).

Before this there were a few small problems I had with the car and the garage always sorted it all out for me (we all know of the small problems everyone has had with the car - this never bothered me), however the Turbo blowing really has made me lose confidence in the car :-(

A really big shame since I love the look of the car and how it drives. To answer the question by a couple of you I did have the car chipped in February by Angel Tuning, so I would like to have the opinion from others on this site.

Did the turbo go because of the chip, or was it just really bad luck?
Any advice or views from anyone out there would be great :)

I think I am right in saying Angel would have done an ECU re-map rather than a re-chip. There has been some considerable debate, both informed and less so on the Re-mapping debate concerning how it is done etc, with the main players being Celtic, Angel and GSR. I am due a re-map in September with GSR as I feel confident they will do what is best for my motor to give me some benefits.
