Technical Blown Turbo

My 1.8 20VT Seat Ibiza Cupra had good engine / turbo reliability imho... it got abused daily and the engine or turbo never gave way (bar a sensor or 2)... that had been played with a fare bit too...

Thinking about getting another..... need something that has some speed for the weekend... T-Jet is kinda boring me already ;-(

FYI - the turbo was made by KKK.

Think its the same on most the 1.8's and the 2.0's (also the dervs) , KKK Ko3, KKK Ko3s, KKK Ko4

If your turbo is wining after remapping I would be looking at the condition of the comp wheel &sharft bearings as this tells me you have got to much shaft play & the comp wheel has made contact with the comp housing.

So in short look to servicing the bearings before it's to late and go's belly up on you, as service kit will cost you around A$180 plus yopur labour, new Turbo down under have a list price of almost A$3K

Best regards Phil

Sleep great thanks,I gave customer the choice. I'm just doing my job,if I wanted to be nasty I would of wrote over the remap. Not my fault customer has excessive smoke when the 'boot it'.

Sorry Guys

I'm running my first diesel and am clueless, but how much smoke is too much?

To all those who are getting worried over nothing, lets take a look at some basics hear.

All the Modern diesel turbo engines make almost no smoke when up to operating temps, you will get some on start up when every thing is cold but this will clear normally after30 secto a 1 min to maybe 2 min if it realy cold.

The smoke these guys are talking about is normally a white to light gray smoke & very heavy at the time of the turbo braking, at the same time there is a big loses of power, then the engine will go in to a limp mode or just shut down. (the smoke comes from the engine oil getting in to the inlet track and some times the ex at the same time)

It is very rear for a modern Diesel engine to being damaged with a turbo failer; as there is the intercooler in the way to catch any loose debary, most of the failers I have now seen are from over driving cars with modified engines with modified engine maps & in creased boost pressures. ( in the big failers Turbo shaft normaly brakes and will put bits in to every were and if it is a high speed failer but most are as a resault of warn out the turbo bearing and is letting engine oil past is seals back in to th ex system or back in to the inlet track)

So long as you look after the car drive it correctly it will give you fantastic service.

I have seen new 2006 built Fiat Grande Punto sports hear in Australia with over 120Kms (75,000 Miles) on them still going fine no problems but the cars have been well looked after.

Best regards Phil

well i would tend to agree with you there, untill last weekend. out with my pal in his mk4 golf diesel, chipped, dump valve etc, he was giving it real large around an industrial estate, untill he was going sideways around a corner and bang. i thought he had blagged a tyre of a rim at first, untill looked behind us, smoke like a californian bush fire, no power, popping and farting all over the place...... ****e the turbos blown fella i will lay money on it. anyhow limps back to my gaffe covering half the city in smog, has a chat to a pal whos into vws, turns out the intercooler pipe was blown off while ragging it. so half hour later a bit o hose the car is good as new again. now i reckon 99% of people would have bet on a shagged turbo we still cant believe it, they must be bomb proof. and to add to the surprise of that day, i lived through his driving to tell the tale........:bang:

I know it's 4 years on but this post identifies me as one of the 99%. Car blew on Saturday night and was carted off to my local garage, Sandy Garage in St.Austell, Cornwall, who I trust implicitly. The owner said to me "maybe it's only an intercooler hose". I should be so lucky, thinks I. Confirmed as hose this morning, should have it back soon. Had to go with fiat parts, not the recommended flouro lined ones on here, as the guy's off on his hols for two weeks on Thursday. Celtic remapped the car but I couldn't have blamed them if the turbo had failed, it's been fine for over 4 years.
